4 Ways to Play Duck Duck Goose

Duck Duck Goose is a classic playground game that has been enjoyed by children for generations. It is a simple yet engaging activity, perfect for kids of all ages. In the traditional version, players sit in a circle, and one child walks around the outside, tapping heads and saying “duck” until he or she decides to say “goose” instead. The chosen “goose” then chases the first player around the circle in an attempt to tag him or her before they can return and take the “goose’s” spot in the circle.

While the original game is always a crowd-pleaser, there are many twists and variations that can make it even more fun and exciting. Here are four alternative ways to play Duck Duck Goose:

1. Reverse Duck Duck Goose:

In this version, everything runs opposite to the traditional way of playing. Instead of walking around the circle clockwise, players walk counterclockwise. The “goose” chases the first player in the opposite direction as well. This simple change adds new excitement and novelty for kids who are used to playing it one way.

2. Animal-Themed Duck Duck Goose:

Put a unique spin on the game by replacing “duck” and “goose” with other animals; for example, you might say, “cat, cat, dog.” Each time you play, choose different animals and accompanying sounds that those animals make. When a child is chosen as the dog (or other animal), they have to chase after their friend while also making that animal’s sound.

3. Silly Walks Duck Duck Goose:

Add some laughter to this classic game by having the chosen “goose” perform a silly walk as they chase their friend around the circle. For instance, they might have to hop like a frog, walk crab-style, or skip instead of running normally. Not only will this add variety, but it also levels the playing field, making it more challenging for some players.

4. Freeze-Frame Duck Duck Goose:

In this variation, when the first player selects a “goose,” all other children in the circle have to freeze in place like statues. The “goose” must try to chase and tag the first player while weaving around the frozen children. This adds an additional challenge, as players need to avoid running into their friends during the chase.

By incorporating these fun alternatives, Duck Duck Goose continues to be an entertaining playground game for kids of all ages. Each variation brings new excitement and challenges that will keep children engaged and wanting to play more.
