Introduction:

Raising an orphaned lamb can be a rewarding and compassionate experience. While taking care of an orphaned lamb may seem overwhelming, following these 12 simple steps can ensure the health and happiness of your new wooly friend.

1. Determine the age of the lamb:

Identifying the age of the orphaned lamb will help establish a proper care routine. You can tell the age by examining its teeth and by its size and weight.

2. Provide immediate warmth:

Newborn lambs are unable to regulate their body temperature, so make sure you provide a warm, draft-free environment with ample bedding to prevent hypothermia.

3. Bottle feeding with colostrum:

Obtain fresh or frozen colostrum, ideally from another ewe. Feed the lamb within its first few hours of life for crucial antibodies it needs for survival.

4. Transition to milk replacer:

After the first day, transition the lamb to a high-quality commercial lamb milk replacer, which closely resembles ewes’ milk.

5. Bottle feeding schedule:

During the first weeks, feed the lamb every 4-6 hours. Gradually reduce feedings as it gets older and starts consuming more solid food.

6. Monitor weight gain:

Ensure that your orphaned lamb is growing appropriately by regularly weighing it and adjusting its food intake accordingly.

7. Introduce hay and pelleted grains:

Gradually introduce quality hay (especially alfalfa) and pelleted grains into their diet after 2-3 weeks to help with rumination development.

8. Provide clean water at all times:

Always have clean water available to support proper hydration and digestive health.

9. Vaccinations and deworming:

Follow your veterinarian’s advice regarding vaccinations and deworming schedules based on your region’s specific needs.

10. Socialization with other animals:

Integrating the lamb with other sheep or animals is critical for its cognitive and social development, as well as reducing stress.

11. Safety and shelter:

Ensure a secure, predator-proof environment that provides protection from the elements. Shelter should also have proper ventilation and adequate space for growth.

12. Weaning:

Begin weaning the lamb off the bottle by 6-8 weeks of age or when it’s consuming sufficient solid food to maintain healthy growth.

Conclusion:

With careful attention to your orphaned lamb’s needs and following these steps, you’ll be able to provide a nurturing environment that fosters its growth into a strong, healthy adult sheep. Always consult your veterinarian with any concerns or questions regarding your orphaned lamb’s care and well-being.
