Chinese pearl barley, also known as Job’s tears or coix seed, is a versatile and nutritious grain that has been a staple in Asian cuisine for centuries. Known for its nutty flavor and chewy texture, it has gained popularity worldwide due to its numerous health benefits. Packed with essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals, fiber, and protein, Chinese pearl barley can be easily incorporated into your daily diet. Here are three delicious ways to use Chinese pearl barley in your meals.

1. Chinese Pearl Barley Congee:

Congee is a comforting and customizable porridge made from rice or other grains and is consumed throughout Asia. You can replace traditional rice with Chinese pearl barley to create a more nutritious and wholesome meal.

Ingredients:

– 1 cup Chinese pearl barley, soaked overnight

– 5 cups water or chicken/vegetable broth

– Salt and pepper to taste

– Optional toppings: shredded chicken, boiled eggs, chopped scallions, soy sauce

Instructions:

1. Drain and rinse the soaked Chinese pearl barley.

2. In a large pot or slow cooker, combine the barley with water or broth.

3. Cook on low heat for about 2 hours until the barley is soft and the consistency is thick.

4. Season with salt and pepper as needed.

5. Serve hot with your choice of toppings.

2. Chinese Pearl Barley Salad:

A colorful and refreshing salad packed with flavor, this dish combines the nutty taste of Chinese pearl barley with various fruits and vegetables.

Ingredients:

– 2 cups cooked Chinese pearl barley

– 1 cup chopped cucumber

– 1 cup diced bell peppers (red, yellow or orange)

– 1 cup halved cherry tomatoes

– 1/2 cup chopped cilantro or parsley

– 3 tbsp olive oil

– Juice of one lemon

– Salt and pepper

Instructions:

1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked pearl barley, cucumber, bell peppers, cherry tomatoes, and cilantro or parsley.

2. In a separate bowl, whisk together olive oil and lemon juice.

3. Pour the dressing over the salad ingredients and gently toss to combine.

4. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

5. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving.

3. Chinese Pearl Barley Stir-Fry:

Adding Chinese pearl barley to your stir-fries can give them a unique twist and an additional source of nutrients.

Ingredients:

– 2 cups cooked Chinese pearl barley

– 1 cup sliced vegetables (carrots, broccoli, zucchini)

– 1/2 cup diced tofu or chicken

– 2 tbsp soy sauce

– 1 tbsp vegetable oil

– Optional: minced garlic, ginger, green onions

Instructions:

1. Heat a wok or large skillet over medium-high heat.

2. Add vegetable oil and cook the tofu or chicken until fully cooked.

3. Add the sliced vegetables and sauté until tender but still crunchy.

4. Add cooked pearl barley to the wok and stir-fry for another 2 minutes.

5. Stir in soy sauce to taste and optional minced garlic, ginger, and green onions.

6. Serve hot with steamed rice or noodles.

Chinese pearl barley is a healthy and delicious option that can easily be incorporated into various recipes like congee, salads, or stir-fries. Give these dishes a try and enjoy the numerous health benefits that come with this versatile grain!
