Learning to write German numbers is an important skill for any language learner. This simple three-step guide will help you master the process and improve your understanding of the German numbering system.

Step 1: Learn the Basic German Numbers

The first step in learning to write German numbers is to familiarize yourself with the basic numbers. Here are the numbers 1-10 in German:

1 – eins

2 – zwei

3 – drei

4 – vier

5 – fünf

6 – sechs

7 – sieben

8 – acht

9 – neun

10 – zehn

Take time to practice saying and writing these numbers until they become second nature. It’s important that you can recognize and say them without having to think too hard.

Step 2: Learn to Combine Numbers

To write larger German numbers, you’ll need to learn how compound numbers are formed. In English, we often say “twenty-one” or “thirty-five.” In German, compound numbers are written as a single word, and the smaller number comes first. For example:

11 – elf

12- zwölf

20 – zwanzig

21 – einundzwanzig (ein + und + zwanzig)

Using this pattern, it’s easy to write out any number between twenty-one and ninety-nine.

Step 3: Understand Tens, Hundreds, Thousands, and Millions

Next, familiarize yourself with the various increments of tens, hundreds, thousands, and millions in German:

100 – hundert

1000 – tausend

1.000.000 – Million (plural: Millionen)

Again, notice that large numbers are written as a single word.

500 – fünfhundert (fünf + hundert)

2030 – zweitausenddreißig (zwei + tausend + dreißig)

This method applies to all larger numbers: simply combine the appropriate increments to form the number you’re trying to write.

Conclusion

Writing German numbers is a straightforward process once you’ve learned the basic rules. Practice saying and writing these numbers regularly, and in no time, you’ll have mastered the art of writing numbers in German.
