A drawstring backpack is not only a stylish accessory but also a practical item for everyday use. They are perfect for carrying all your essentials, such as books, snacks, or workout gear. Making your own drawstring backpack is surprisingly easy – even if you’re not an expert in sewing! In this article, we will guide you through the process of creating one from start to finish.

Materials and Tools You’ll Need:

1. Sturdy fabric (cotton or canvas is recommended)

2. Ruler or measuring tape

3. Scissors

4. Sewing machine (or a needle and thread)

5. Pins

6. Fabric pen or tailor’s chalk

7. 2 pieces of cord or ribbon (about 1 yard each)

8. 2 grommets

Step 1: Cut Your Fabric

First, select the fabric of your choice and cut it into two equal pieces sized at 15 x 18 inches (38 x 46 cm). These measurements can be adjusted according to your preference by making the pieces larger or smaller.

Step 2: Hem the Top Edge of Each Fabric Piece

Fold the top edge of each fabric piece in by approximately half an inch (1 cm) and pin it in place. Sew along the folded edge using a straight stitch, removing pins as you go.

Step 3: Sew Side Seams

Place both fabric pieces right sides together, aligning their edges. Pin them together along the sides and bottom edges, ensuring that the top hemmed edges are aligned.

Sew along both sides and the bottom using a half-inch (1 cm) seam allowance, leaving the top hemmed edge open to create an opening for your drawstring.

Step 4: Add Grommets

Following the manufacturer’s instructions, attach one grommet to each bottom corner of your backpack on the right side of the fabric. The grommets will help protect the fabric from wear and tear.

Step 5: Create Casings for the Drawstring

Fold down the top hemmed edge of your backpack fabric inward about an inch (2.5 cm) and pin it in place. This will create a casing for your drawstring cords. Sew along the bottom edge of this folded section, being mindful not to sew over any grommet openings.

Step 6: Insert Drawstrings

Using a safety pin, thread one cord or ribbon through both casings, starting and ending at one grommet hole. Tie a knot at both ends to secure it in place.

Repeat this step with the second cord or ribbon, but this time starting and ending at the other grommet hole. Once both cords are secured, you should be able to cinch the backpack closed by pulling on them.

Step 7: Final Touches

Turn your backpack right side out and admire your handmade creation. You now have a functional and stylish drawstring backpack that’s perfect for on-the-go adventures!

In conclusion, creating your own drawstring backpack is a simple and fun project that can be customized to fit your personal style. By following these steps, you’ll have a unique accessory that reflects your taste – all while saving money on store-bought alternatives.
