Introduction:

Raspberry jam is a delightful and versatile pantry staple that can be used for so much more than just toast. From filling pastries to topping ice cream, this vibrant and flavorful fruit preserve is worth making at home. This simple recipe for homemade raspberry jam will guide you through the process of creating this delicious condiment using just a few basic ingredients.

Ingredients:

– 4 cups fresh raspberries

– 2 cups granulated sugar

– 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice

– 1 teaspoon pectin (optional)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the raspberries: Rinse the raspberries thoroughly under cold water and let them drain on paper towels or in a colander until all the excess water is gone.

2. Mash the berries: Place the raspberries in a large, heavy pot and use a potato masher or fork to crush them, releasing their juice. You can choose to leave some bigger pieces if you prefer chunkier jam or mash thoroughly for a smoother consistency.

3. Add sugar and lemon juice: Stir in the granulated sugar and lemon juice, mixing well to combine with the mashed berries.

4. Cook the jam: Place the pot with raspberries, sugar, and lemon juice over medium-high heat. Bring the mixture to a boil while stirring frequently to prevent it from sticking to the bottom of the pot. Once boiling, reduce heat to medium-low and allow it to simmer for 20-25 minutes, until thickened.

5. Test for doneness: To check if your jam has reached its desired consistency, take a spoonful out of the pot and place it on a plate in the fridge for a few minutes. If it gels up nicely and doesn’t run when tilted, your jam is ready! If not, continue cooking for a few more minutes.

6. Add pectin (optional): If you prefer a thicker jam, you can stir in a teaspoon of pectin at this point. Follow the package instructions regarding cooking and setting times.

7. Final steps: Once your jam has reached its desired consistency, remove it from heat and allow it to cool slightly. Skim off any foam or excess seeds with a spoon, if needed.

8. Jar and store: Pour the jam into sterilized jars, leaving about ¼ inch of headspace at the top. Wipe the rims clean, seal with lids, and process in a hot water bath canner for 10 minutes if desired (follow specific canning guidelines for your area). Alternatively, you can simply refrigerate the jars once completely cool.

Conclusion:

Homemade raspberry jam is not only delicious but also economical and free from artificial preservatives or additives. By following this easy recipe, you’ll have a delightfully sweet and tart condiment to enjoy with breakfast, desserts, or as a thoughtful gift for friends and family.
