3 Ways to Housebreak Shih Tzu Puppies

Housebreaking a Shih Tzu puppy can be a challenging task, but with patience and consistency, it is possible to teach them good habits. Shih Tzus are intelligent and eager to please, which makes them excellent candidates for successful housebreaking. In this article, we will discuss three effective techniques to housebreak your Shih Tzu puppy: crate training, potty pad training, and the outdoor potty method.

1. Crate Training

Crate training is an effective way to establish boundaries and routines for your Shih Tzu puppy. It gives them a sense of security and ensures that they have a safe space to retreat when needed. To successfully crate-train your pup, follow these steps:

a. Choose the right-sized crate: The crate should be large enough for your puppy to stand up, turn around, and lie down comfortably but not so spacious that they can easily relieve themselves in one corner.

b. Introduce your puppy to the crate: Make the crate a comfortable and inviting space by placing bedding and toys inside. Encourage your pup to explore the crate on their terms without forcing them in.

c. Establish a routine: Feed your puppy their meals in the crate and allow them to take naps inside. Gradually increase the amount of time they spend in the crate during the day.

d. Reinforce positive behavior: Praise your pup each time they eliminate outside and let them spend more time out of the crate as a reward.

2. Potty Pad Training

Potty pad training is another option for housebreaking Shih Tzu puppies, especially if you live in an apartment or have limited outdoor space:

a. Set up a designated area: Choose a consistent spot in your home where you will place the potty pads, ideally close to where your pup sleeps.

b. Introduce your pup to the potty pad: Bring your Shih Tzu puppy to the pad frequently, and reward them with praise and treats for eliminating on the pad.

c. Gradually move the pad closer to the door: Over time, move the pad closer to your desired exit, encouraging your pup to associate going near the door with potty time.

d. Transition to outside: Once your puppy consistently uses the potty pad near the door, begin moving it outdoors. Praise and reward them for using the pad outside until they eventually go directly outdoors without the need for a pad.

3. The Outdoor Potty Method

The outdoor potty method is ideal for pet owners who have ample access to outdoor spaces:

a. Establish a schedule: Take your Shih Tzu puppy outside on a consistent schedule after meals, naps, and playtimes.

b. Designate a potty spot: Choose a location outside where you want your puppy to eliminate and always bring them to that spot.

c. Use a command word: When you bring your pup to their designated potty spot, use a consistent command such as “go potty” to reinforce their understanding of what is expected.

d. Reward success: Praise and offer treats each time your puppy eliminates in their designated spot.

Housebreaking Shih Tzu puppies may require some patience and persistence, but with proper training techniques and positive reinforcement, it is possible to establish good habits that will last a lifetime. Whether you choose crate training, potty pad training, or the outdoor potty method, remember that consistency is key. Happy training!
