Introduction:

Ferrocement tanks are versatile, cost-effective, and eco-friendly structures used for various purposes such as water storage, biogas plants, and even housing. Constructing a ferrocement tank is a relatively simple process that can be carried out with limited resources and experience. This article will guide you through the necessary steps to build a sturdy and long-lasting ferrocement tank.

Materials:

Before you begin the construction process, gather all the essential materials:

  1. Cement
  2. Sand
  3. Galvanized wire mesh
  4. Steel reinforcement bars (rebars)
  5. Heavy-duty plastic sheets or tarpaulin
  6. Binding wire
  7. Water
  8. Mixing tools
  9. Shovels
  10. Pelican hook or wire cutters

Steps to Build a Ferrocement Tank:

Step 1: Designing and Excavation

Choose an appropriate location for the ferrocement tank and create a design that suits your specific requirements. It’s essential to ensure proper drainage around the tank to prevent waterlogging issues in the future.

Mark the foundation of the tank using pegs or marking paint, and dig a trench approximately 1 to 2 feet deep around the perimeter for appropriate support.

Step 2: Foundation Preparation

Prepare a sand cushion by filling up the excavated trench with a layer of compacted sand for a strong foundation. Then, lay out galvanized wire mesh directly onto the sand cushion, ensuring it is placed evenly.

Step 3: Reinforcement Bars Installation

Using rebars, build an inner frame that is proportional to the size of your planned tank while aligning it with the already laid-out wire mesh on the sand cushion.

Attach the rebars to each other using binding wire while maintaining equal spacing in between.

Step 4: Wire Mesh Wrapping

Wrap the galvanized wire mesh around the rebar frame in concentric circles, overlapping and securing them at regular intervals using binding wire.

Step 5: Prepare the Cement Mortar

Mix the cement, sand, and water to form a thick consistency resembling a paste. The ideal ratio is 1 part cement to 3 parts sand. Ensure that you mix the ingredients properly for a uniform consistency.

Step 6: Application of Cement Mortar

Start applying the first layer of cement mortar onto the wire mesh structure with a thickness of about 1/4 inch. Make sure to work from bottom to top and maintain evenness throughout.

Once this initial layer has been applied, use a trowel or shovel to smooth out any uneven areas while shaping the desired final form of your ferrocement tank.

Step 7: Curing Process

Cover the entire structure with heavy-duty plastic sheets or tarpaulin to retain moisture.

Lightly spray water over it at least two times a day for about a week to facilitate proper curing.

Step 8: Final Plaster Layer

After the curing process is complete, apply another layer of cement mortar on top of the previous one for a smooth and watertight finish. Allow it to dry completely before using the tank.

Conclusion:

Building a ferrocement tank may seem challenging initially, but by following these simple steps, you can create a durable and long-lasting tank tailored to your specific needs. With some dedication and hard work, you can produce an efficient ecosystem-friendly structure that provides numerous benefits.
