Introduction:

Country gravy, also known as white gravy or sawmill gravy, is a savory staple in Southern cuisine. It’s the perfect companion for biscuits, fried chicken, and so much more! If you’re looking to master this delicious sauce, there are many ways to make it. Here are three easy methods to prepare country gravy that will have your family coming back for seconds.

1. Classic Country Gravy

Ingredients:

– 1/4 cup unsalted butter

– 1/4 cup all-purpose flour

– 2 cups whole milk

– Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions:

1. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter.

2. Add in the flour and stir continuously with a whisk for about 2 minutes until it forms a roux.

3. Gradually pour in the milk while continuing to whisk until the mixture is smooth and thick.

4. Cook for another 5 minutes, whisking occasionally, or until desired consistency is reached.

5. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

2. Country Gravy with Sausage

Ingredients:

– 1/2 pound ground breakfast sausage

– 1/4 cup all-purpose flour

– 2 cups whole milk

– Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions:

1. In a saucepan over medium heat, cook the ground sausage until browned and cooked through.

2. Remove the sausage from the pan but leave the rendered fat.

3. Add in the flour to create a roux by stirring continuously for 2 minutes.

4. Slowly pour in the milk while continuing to whisk until smooth and thickened.

5. Return the cooked sausage to the pan and cook for another 5 minutes or until desired consistency is reached.

6. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

3. Country Gravy with Bacon

Ingredients:

– 5-6 slices of bacon, chopped

– 1/4 cup all-purpose flour

– 2 cups whole milk

– Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions:

1. Cook the chopped bacon in a saucepan over medium heat until crispy.

2. Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon, leaving the rendered fat in the pan.

3. Add in the flour and continuously whisk for about 2 minutes to form a roux.

4. Gradually pour in the milk while whisking until smooth and thickened.

5. Add the cooked bacon back into the pan and cook for another 5 minutes or until desired consistency is reached.

6. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Conclusion:

These three methods of making country gravy offer delicious variations for distinct flavors and textures. Now that you’ve learned how to make classic country gravy as well as gravy with sausage or bacon, find your favorite biscuits, chicken-fried steak, or mashed potatoes and enjoy this comforting, Southern classic!
