4 Ways to Fix Cracked Fondant on a Cake

Introduction:

Fondant is a versatile and beautiful way to decorate cakes, but it can be a bit temperamental sometimes. Cracked fondant can result from various factors, such as drying out too quickly or uneven rolling. But don’t worry! With some care and attention, you can fix those pesky cracks without starting over from scratch. Here are four ways to mend cracked fondant and save your cake masterpiece.

1. Apply Shortening:

If the fondant cracks while it’s still pliable, smoothing a small amount of shortening onto the cracks with your fingers is a quick and easy solution. The shortening will help moisturize the fondant, seal the cracks, and provide a smooth finish. Keep applying shortening as needed but remember to use it sparingly since too much will make your fondant sticky.

2. Use Fondant Smoothers:

Fondant smoothers are plastic tools used to eliminate imperfections on the surface of rolled fondant by applying even pressure. To fix minor cracks, press the smoother gently on top of the cracked area and rub in light circular motions until the crack disappears or becomes less visible. You may also use the edge of the smoother to push any displaced fondant back into place.

3. Patch with Fresh Fondant:

If you have larger or deeper cracks that need more than just smoothing, take some fresh fondant and roll it into a thin sheet or rope-like shape according to the size of the crack. Gently press it into the crack and blend the edges of the patch with your finger, applying a little water or edible glue for better adhesion. Once everything has dried, go over the patched area one more time with a clean fondant smoother for a seamless finish.

4. Rehydrate Fondant with Steam:

Sometimes, cracked fondant can be fixed simply by rehydrating it. Hold a steamer or a kettle with boiling water about 12 inches away from the cake and let the steam gently moisten the fondant surface. This will help to soften the fondant, making it more pliable and easier to work with. Once softened, you can use a fondant smoother or your fingers to carefully smooth out the cracks.

Conclusion:

Even with careful preparation, it’s not uncommon to face cracked fondant on a cake. Knowing these four methods will allow you to fix those cracks and maintain your cake’s beautiful appearance. Remember that practice makes perfect, so don’t get discouraged if everything doesn’t go perfectly the first time. The more you work with fondant, the better you’ll become at handling it and preventing cracks from appearing in the first place. Happy cake decorating!
