Caramelized onions add a sweet, savory flavor to any dish, and they’re incredibly simple to make. Follow these 11 steps to create delicious caramelized onions that will elevate your meals.

1. Choose the right onions: Yellow onions are the best choice for caramelizing, as they have a natural sweetness that enhances the caramelization process.

2. Gather necessary equipment: You’ll need a large skillet or frying pan, a cutting board, a sharp knife, cooking oil or butter, salt, and a spatula or wooden spoon.

3. Slice the onions: Peel off the outer skin of each onion, then cut them in half from top to bottom. Place each half flat-side down on the cutting board and slice into thin half-moons.

4. Heat the skillet: Place your skillet over medium-low heat. Allow it to warm up before adding oil or butter.

5. Add oil or butter: Use about 1-2 tablespoons of cooking oil or unsalted butter for each onion you’re caramelizing.

6. Add onions and season with salt: Once the oil or butter has melted and evenly coats the pan, add the sliced onions and spread them evenly across the skillet. Season with a pinch of salt to help draw out their moisture.

7. Cook slowly and patiently: Caramelizing onions takes time, so be patient and cook them gently on medium-low heat. Stir occasionally to ensure they cook evenly and don’t stick to the pan.

8. Adjust heat as necessary: If you notice your onions browning too quickly or burning, lower the heat slightly and continue cooking.

9. Keep an eye on their progress: After about 30 minutes, your onions should start turning soft and golden brown in color. If not, adjust your heat accordingly and remain patient – proper caramelization can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour.

10. Deglaze the pan (optional): If there are any browned bits sticking to the bottom of the skillet, deglaze the pan with a splash of water, wine, or broth. Use your spatula to scrape up those flavorful bits and mix them back in with the onions.

11. Check for doneness: Your caramelized onions are ready when they’re soft, deeply golden in color, and have a rich, sweet-savory flavor. Remove from heat and let them cool before adding to your preferred dishes.

And there you have it – 11 simple steps to making delicious caramelized onions that will elevate your favorite recipes. Patience is critical in this process but trust us; the results are worth the wait. Enjoy incorporating caramelized onions into sandwiches, pizzas, pasta dishes, and more!
