3 Ways to Eat Prosciutto

Prosciutto, a salty and rich Italian cured ham, has long been a favorite among food enthusiasts for its versatility and deliciousness. This delicate delight can elevate even the simplest dish, making it an ideal ingredient for home chefs and professional kitchens alike. Here, we explore three amazing ways to enjoy prosciutto.

1. Wrapped Around Fresh Fruit

Combining savory prosciutto with sweet, juicy fruit creates an irresistible juxtaposition of flavors and textures. One classic pairing is melon and prosciutto – simply wrap thin slices of this cured meat around fresh melon wedges or cantaloupe for a satisfying appetizer or light snack.

Another option to consider is wrapping prosciutto slices around fresh figs or halved pears. The natural sweetness of these fruits complements the saltiness of the prosciutto beautifully. For an even more indulgent treat, add a dollop of creamy goat cheese or ricotta before wrapping the fruit in prosciutto.

2. Prosciutto-topped Pizza

Gourmet pizzas have become increasingly popular in recent years, and it’s no wonder given the endless array of ingenious toppings that can be added to create unique flavor combinations. One such standout is prosciutto-topped pizza.

To make your own at home, start by preparing your favorite pizza dough and sauce recipe (or use store-bought versions to save time). Add thinly sliced prosciutto as a topping alongside other ingredients like mozzarella cheese, cherry tomatoes, basil leaves, or even arugula for extra zing. Bake in a hot oven until the crust is golden and the cheese is melted and bubbly.

For a more traditional take on this dish, try using an authentic Italian-style thin-crust pizza dough topped with just olive oil, thinly sliced tomatoes, mozzarella di bufala, and torn basil leaves. Once cooked, finish by draping thin slices of prosciutto over the top.

3. Prosciutto-Stuffed Chicken Breasts

Dinner parties and special occasions call for something more elevated, and prosciutto-stuffed chicken breasts never fail to impress. To prepare this dish, start by butterflying a boneless, skinless chicken breast and pounding it flat between sheets of plastic wrap.

Next, layer on thinly sliced prosciutto, some thinly sliced cheese (Swiss or fontina work great), and a handful of baby spinach leaves or fresh basil. Carefully roll up the stuffed chicken breast, securing it with toothpicks to keep it together as it cooks.

Bake the rolled chicken breasts in a hot oven, or for an even more luxurious finish, sear them in a hot pan until golden before transferring them to the oven to cook through. Once cooked, remove from the oven and let rest for a few minutes before slicing into rounds to reveal the beautiful prosciutto-filled center.

In conclusion, as these three fantastic dishes demonstrate, there are countless ways to incorporate prosciutto into your culinary repertoire – from simple appetizers to elegant entrees. With its unique flavor and convenience, this Italian cured ham is sure to become a beloved staple in your kitchen.
