Introduction:

Potty training a Shih Tzu can be challenging, but with patience, consistency, and the right techniques, you’ll have your furry friend using the bathroom like a pro in no time. In this article, we’ll explore three effective ways to potty train a Shih Tzu and help you decide which method is right for you and your pet.

1. Crate Training:

Crate training is a popular and convenient method for potty training dogs of all breeds. It relies on a dog’s natural instincts to keep their den clean. To start crate training your Shih Tzu, follow these steps:

a) Select an appropriately-sized crate: Your dog should have enough space to stand up, turn around and lie down comfortably. However, it should not be too spacious as this might encourage them to use one corner as their bathroom.

b) Create a routine: Set up a strict schedule for feeding, drinking water, and potty breaks. This will help your dog understand when it’s time for each activity.

c) Praise and reward: Every time your Shih Tzu uses the potty in the correct area during crate training, offer immediate praise and rewards (treats or affection) to reinforce positive behavior.

2. Indoor potty training using puppy pads or artificial grass:

If you live in an apartment or have limited access to outdoor spaces, indoor potty training may be the best option for you. To begin this process:

a) Choose a designated “potty spot”: This should be an easy-to-clean area away from their feeding or sleeping area.

b) Introduce your Shih Tzu to the spot: Bring them to their designated spot frequently, especially after eating or drinking water. Set up the puppy pad or artificial grass in this area.

c) Reward success: As with crate training, be sure to provide praise and rewards every time your Shih Tzu uses the designated area for their bathroom needs.

d) Gradually reduce the size of the indoor potty: As your dog becomes more consistent in using their designated spot, you can slowly reduce the size of the puppy pad or artificial grass until it represents a specific target.

3. Outdoor potty training with a leash:

This method involves teaching your Shih Tzu to associate going outdoors with relieving themselves. To successful train your dog:

a) Establish a consistent schedule for feeding, drinking water, and potty breaks.

b) Choose a specific outdoor area: Select a particular spot in your yard or nearby where your Shih Tzu will exclusively eliminate.

c) Take them to the designated spot on a leash: By controlling their movements with a leash, you can guide them to the appropriate spot each time.

d) Praise and reward: Offer immediate praise and treats after successful elimination to positively reinforce this behavior.

Conclusion:

Selecting the right potty training method for your Shih Tzu depends on your living situation, schedule, and personal preferences. Whichever method you choose, remember that patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement are key to helping your furry friend become fully potty-trained in no time. Good luck!
