3 Ways to Potty Train a Dachshund

Introduction:

Dachshunds, with their elongated bodies and friendly nature, are a popular dog breed across the globe. However, potty training a dachshund can be a challenging task due to their stubborn personalities. Here are three effective ways to potty train your dachshund efficiently and make the process smoother for both of you.

1. Consistency and Routine:

Establishing a consistent routine is the key to successfully potty training your dachshund. Choose designated spots for them to use as their bathroom, either indoors or outdoors.

– Set regular potty times, such as after waking up, meals, playtime, and before bedtime.

– Ensure they have enough opportunity to relieve themselves throughout the day.

– Reward your dachshund with praise or treats for successful eliminations in the designated area.

– Be patient and anticipate that accidents may happen, especially at the beginning of the training process.

2. Crate Training:

Crate training can be an invaluable tool in potty training your dachshund by providing them with a safe and confined space.

– Choose a crate that’s large enough for them to stand up, turn around, and lay down comfortably but not too large that they might treat one corner as a spot for elimination.

– Introduce your dachshund gradually to the crate by placing their bed or favorite toys inside. This will create positive associations with the crate.

– Ensure you let them out for regular bathroom breaks and offer praise when they relieve themselves in the designated area.

– Avoid leaving your pet in the crate for extended periods. A general rule of thumb is one hour per one month of age, plus an extra hour.

3. Observation and Intervention:

Learning to identify signs that your dachshund needs to go is critical in the potty-training process.

– Pay attention to their behaviors such as sniffing, circling, whining, or suddenly stopping playtime.

– Immediately take them to their designated bathroom spot once you notice these signs.

– Accompany your dachshund during potty breaks to offer praise and reinforcement for good behavior.

Conclusion:

Potty training a dachshund can be a daunting task. However, with consistency, patience, and positive reinforcement, your furry friend will soon establish good habits. Remember that each dog is unique, and what works for one may not work for another. If you continue to struggle with potty training after trying these methods, consulting a professional dog trainer for further guidance can be beneficial
