Calculating the percentage difference between two numbers helps us understand how much one number varies by in relation to another. This concept is regularly used in various fields such as finance, business, and even day-to-day life. In this article, we will walk you through a step-by-step guide on how to calculate percentages between two numbers.

Step 1: Determine the Two Numbers

First, you need to identify the two numbers you want to calculate the percentage difference between. We will call these values `A` and `B`. For instance, if you want to find out the percentage difference in your salary after receiving a raise, `A` would be your initial salary and `B` would be your new salary.

Step 2: Calculate the Difference

Now that you have identified the two numbers `A` and `B`, subtract the smaller number from the larger number to find the difference. The formula for calculating the difference is:

Difference = Larger Number – Smaller Number

Step 3: Find out the Base Value

The base value is essential for calculating the percentage because it allows us to determine what percentage the difference represents when comparing it to either `A` or `B`. Generally, we use the original value or initial number as our base value. However, it depends on your specific requirement.

Step 4: Calculate the Percentage

To calculate the percentage, divide the difference obtained in Step 2 by the base value from Step 3. Multiply this answer by 100 to get the percentage difference between `A` and `B`. The formula for calculating percentage difference is as follows:

Percentage Difference = (Difference / Base Value) * 100

Example

Let’s take an example to understand this better:

Suppose your initial salary (`A`) was $40,000 and after receiving a raise, your new salary (`B`) is $45,000.

Step 1: Identify the two numbers: `A` = 40,000 and `B` = 45,000

Step 2: Calculate the difference: 45,000 – 40,000 = 5,000

Step 3: Determine the base value (we’ll use the initial salary as the base value): Base Value = `A` = 40,000

Step 4: Calculate the percentage difference: (5,000 / 40,000) * 100 = (0.125) * 100 = 12.5%

Therefore, there is a 12.5% increase in your salary after receiving the raise.

And that’s it! You now have a straightforward process for calculating percentages between two numbers. Understanding this concept is invaluable in many aspects of life and can help you make informed decisions.
