How to Play the Card Game Speed

Spread the love

Speed is a captivating and fast-paced card game that can provide hours of entertainment. It is often played with two players and requires quick thinking and even quicker reflexes. The object of the game is to be the first player to get rid of all your cards by matching them in ascending or descending numerical order with the cards on the table. This article will guide you through the basic rules of Speed and offer some helpful tips to get you started.

Equipment Needed:

– A standard deck of 52 playing cards (Jokers removed)

Setup:

1. Shuffle the deck thoroughly.

2. Deal 20 cards to each player, facedown.

3. Next, deal 5 cards face-up in a row between both players, known as the tableau.

4. Finally, place the remaining 12 cards facedown between both players as draw piles.

General Rules:

– Each player’s goal is to play all of their 20 cards on the tableau.

– The tableau has five columns (one column per card), and two active center columns in which players match their cards.

– The number on each card must be either one greater or one less than the number on an active center card for it to be considered a valid play.

Gameplay:

1. Both players will simultaneously announce “3, 2, 1, Speed!” and start playing at once.

2. Each player must now try to stack their cards on top of the active center columns in numerical order, either ascending or descending. For example, if a center card is a five, they can stack either a four or a six on top of it.

3. When neither player can make any moves, they flip one new card from their respective draw pile onto each active center column (totalling two new active cards).

4. Players continue stacking their personal cards as described in Step 2 until they can no longer make a move.

Note: Aces can be stacked on top of Kings, and vice versa.

Winning the Game:

– The first player to get rid of all their personal cards and shout “Speed!” is declared the winner.

Tips for Playing Speed Successfully:

1. Develop a strategy to manage your cards. Use smart plays to create an advantage while managing your personal stockpile of cards efficiently.

2. Keep an eye on your opponent’s moves. Play strategically to block them from making moves and maximize your chances of success.

3. Practice makes perfect. Speed is a game that requires fast thinking and quicker reflexes, so play often to sharpen your skills.

Now that you have a grasp on the rules and some helpful advice, it’s time to grab a deck of cards, find an eager opponent, and put your skills to the test! Remember that practice is the key to becoming proficient at any card game, Speed included. Good luck, and enjoy!
