How to Build a Gambrel Roof: 15 Steps

A gambrel roof, also known as a barn roof, is a popular style for both historical and modern buildings. Its unique two-sloped design provides more headroom and storage space than a traditional gabled roof. If you’re considering building a gambrel roof for your next project, follow these 15 steps to ensure successful construction.

1. Start by drawing up plans: Sketch out a detailed plan for your gambrel roof, including accurate measurements and angles to ensure proper alignment during construction.

2. Determine the size and pitch of the roof: Decide on the desired size and pitch of both the lower and upper slopes based on your needs and preferences.

3. Gather materials: Purchase high-quality lumber, roofing membranes, shingles or metal roofing panels, nails, flashing, and appropriate tools for construction.

4. Build roof trusses: Cut and assemble the necessary truss components, such as the kingpost, lower rafters (shorter & steeper), upper rafters (longer & more shallow), and any required bracing.

5. Assemble gussets: To ensure structural stability at angles where rafters meet, cut plywood gussets to secure connections.

6. Attach gussets: Using carpenter’s glue and nails, fasten gussets securely to your trusses along each angle.

7. Set up scaffolding: Install sturdy scaffolding or another support system around your building’s perimeter for safety during construction.

8. Establish the ridge beam: Mount a strong ridge beam along the peak of the structure that extends from one end of the building to the other in preparation for installing trusses.

9. Install trusses: Raise each truss individually and carefully attach it to the ridge beam using screws or nails. Ensure proper spacing between each truss determined by your specific project requirements.

10. Add additional framework support (optional): To further stabilize your gambrel roof, install collar ties or purlins for added support between trusses.

11. Install sheathing: Once your framework is in place, securely attach plywood or OSB sheathing to the trusses.

12. Apply roofing membrane: Stretch a waterproof, protective roofing membrane across the entire surface of the sheathing. Make sure all seams are overlapped and use roofing nails or staples to install it correctly.

13. Install drip edges and flashing: Place metal drip edges along the eaves and rake edges to direct water away from the building. Add flashing at any roof penetrations such as vent pipes and chimneys.

14. Lay shingles or metal roofing panels: Starting at the lower edge of the roof, work your way upward, overlapping materials as you go to create a watertight barrier for your gambrel roof. Remember to follow manufacturer recommendations for installation.

15. Inspect and clean the roof: Upon completion, conduct a thorough inspection to ensure proper installation and structural integrity. Remove any debris left from construction.

By following these 15 steps, you’ll be well on your way to constructing a beautiful and functional gambrel roof for any building project.
