Introduction:

Sweet potatoes are a versatile and delicious ingredient that can be used in a variety of dishes, from savory to sweet. One of the easiest and healthiest ways to prepare them is by boiling. Boiling sweet potatoes is simple and quick, making it a great option for busy weeknight meals or meal-prepping on the weekends. In this article, we will discuss three ways to boil sweet potatoes – whole, cubed, and sliced – ensuring you have the perfect method for any recipe.

1. Boiling Whole Sweet Potatoes:

Boiling whole sweet potatoes is perfect for recipes that require mashed sweet potatoes, such as pies or casseroles. To boil whole sweet potatoes:

a) Wash the sweet potatoes thoroughly under running water and remove any dirt or debris using a brush or cloth.

b) Place the whole sweet potatoes in a large pot filled with water, ensuring that they are completely submerged.

c) Bring the water to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 30-40 minutes or until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.

d) Remove the sweet potatoes from the water using a slotted spoon and transfer them to a plate or cutting board.

e) Allow the sweet potatoes to cool slightly before peeling off their skins.

2. Boiling Cubed Sweet Potatoes:

Cubed sweet potatoes cook more quickly than whole ones, making this method ideal for salads, side dishes, or recipes that call for pre-cooked sweet potato chunks.

a) Wash and peel your sweet potatoes.

b) Cut the peeled sweet potatoes into 1-inch cubes.

c) Fill a large pot with water and add a pinch of salt. Place the cubed sweet potatoes into the pot, ensuring they are fully submerged.

d) Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to medium and let the sweet potatoes simmer for 7-10 minutes, or until they are fork-tender.

e) Drain the sweet potatoes in a colander and use them as desired.

3. Boiling Sliced Sweet Potatoes:

Sliced sweet potatoes are another quick-cooking option, ideal for making sweet potato fries or chips, or even layered in a gratin.

a) Wash and peel your sweet potatoes.

b) Slice the peeled sweet potatoes into 1/4-inch thick rounds or matchstick-style pieces, depending on your preference.

c) Fill a large pot with water and season with salt. Add the sliced sweet potatoes to the pot, ensuring they are fully submerged.

d) Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to medium and simmer for 5-7 minutes, until the sweet potato slices are tender but not mushy.

e) Drain the sweet potatoes in a colander before using them in your desired recipe.

Conclusion:

Boiling sweet potatoes is a simple and effective way to prepare them for various dishes. Whether you want whole, cubed, or thinly sliced sweet potatoes, boiling is an easy cooking method that yields delicious results every time. Give these three techniques a try – you’ll soon find that boiling sweet potatoes is quick and simple, making it perfect for your busy lifestyle!
