5 Ways to Store Christmas Lights

Christmas is a time of joy, festivities, and sparkling lights that illuminate the magical ambiance of the season. But when it’s time to pack up and store the Christmas lights, you need an effective and organized way of keeping them tangle-free. Here are five creative ways to store your holiday lights and ensure a smooth and easy set-up next Christmas.

1. Cardboard Method

The most popular way of storing Christmas lights is by wrapping them around a piece of cardboard. Cut out a rectangular or square shape from a sturdy cardboard box. Make small cuts on both ends to secure the beginning and end of the light strand. Carefully wrap the lights around the cardboard while trying not to overlap them too much. This method keeps your lights neatly coiled and easy to unwind when it’s time for setup again next year.

2. Plastic Wrap Method

For maximum protection, consider using plastic wrap to store your Christmas lights. Just lay out your strand(s) of light on a flat surface, plug one end in, and begin wrapping the entire structure in plastic wrap, leaving no spaces in between. This will ensure that your lights are completely protected from dust and moisture when in storage.

3. Hose Reel Method

Make use of an old garden hose reel for an easily accessible solution for storing Christmas lights. Attach one end of the light strand to the reel handle with duct tape or zip ties. Slowly turn the reel while guiding the lights as they wrap around it. This method helps you store multiple strands of lights neatly while preventing tangles.

4. Wire Hanger Method

Repurpose old or unused wire hangers for an inexpensive light storage solution. Simply bend the wire hangers into a zig-zag pattern by alternating four right angles along both top edges, leaving space between each angle to create slots for the lights to be wrapped around securely. Secure the ends of the lights to the hanger using a small piece of tape or zip tie, and now you have a quick and cost-effective Christmas light organizer.

5. Storage Tube Method

Invest in a holiday light storage tube – these genius devices are available at most home stores, and are specifically designed for storing at least two or three strands of lights. The tubes often have removable sides, allowing you to wrap the lights around the central column easily. Once wrapped, the cover is closed, and your lights are safe and ready for storage.

Storing your Christmas lights in an organized and tangle-free manner may take some time initially but will save you much frustration when you start decorating your home for the festive season again. Choose one or more of these methods for storing your Christmas lights and welcome hassle-free unwinding when it’s time to spread holiday cheer.
