Whether you are a homeowner or an electrician, knowing how to calculate the total amps in a breaker panel is essential for maintaining safety and efficiency in your electrical system. This guide will provide you with step-by-step instructions to help you accurately determine the total number of amps in your breaker panel.

Step 1: Identify Your Breakers

Begin by opening your breaker panel and listing all the breakers present. You will likely find breakers rated for different amperages such as 15A, 20A, or 30A. Be sure to include each breaker in your list and note its corresponding amperage rating.

Step 2: Determine the Total Amps of Each Circuit

For each breaker, multiply the amperage rating by the voltage level supplied to the circuit (typically either 120V or 240V). This calculation will give you the wattage being supplied to each individual circuit.

For example:

– For a 15A breaker with a 120V circuit: 15 x 120 = 1,800 watts

– For a 20A breaker with a 240V circuit: 20 x 240 = 4,800 watts

Step 3: Calculate Total Wattage

Now that you have determined the wattage for each circuit, add up the total wattage for all circuits in your breaker panel. This figure represents the total power being supplied through your panel.

Step 4: Find Total Amperage

To find the total amps in your breaker panel, divide the total wattage by the main voltage supply (generally either 120V or 240V). The result is your overall amperage capacity.

For example:

If your total wattage equals 14,400 watts and your main voltage is at 240V, then:

Total Amperage = 14,400 watts / 240 volts = 60 amps

Now that you know how to calculate total amps in a breaker panel, you can ensure that your electrical system remains safe and efficient, avoiding potential circuit overloads and other electrical hazards. It is always wise to consult a licensed electrician if you have any concerns about the electrical capacity of your property or need assistance with these calculations.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
