Microsoft Excel is a powerful spreadsheet program that can handle various types of data, including dates. In this article, we will explore the different ways to calculate and manipulate dates in Excel using built-in functions and formulas.

1. Inserting Today’s Date

Excel has a built-in function called TODAY() that you can use to insert today’s date into a cell. Type =TODAY() in the desired cell, and it will instantly display the current date.

2. Calculating Dates in Excel using Simple Arithmetic

Excel stores dates as serial numbers, which makes it easy to perform basic date calculations using simple arithmetic:

– To add or subtract days: use the plus (+) or minus (-) operator.

Example: =A1+7 (adds seven days to the date in cell A1)

– To calculate the difference between two dates: subtract one date from another.

Example: =DUE_DATE – START_DATE (calculates the number of days between due date and start date)

3. Using the EDATE Function for Months Calculations

To add or subtract months from a specified date, use the EDATE function:

– Syntax: =EDATE(start_date, months_to_add)

Example: =EDATE(A1, 3) (adds three months to the date in cell A1)

4. Using the WORKDAY Function for Business Days Calculations

The WORKDAY function calculates a future or past working day based on a specified number of business days:

– Syntax: =WORKDAY(start_date, days_to_add, [holidays])

Example: =WORKDAY(A1, 10) (calculates the date ten business days after the date in cell A1)

5. Determining Weekday Names with TEXT Function

To find the weekday name for any given date, use TEXT function:

– Syntax: =TEXT(date, “dddd”)

Example: =TEXT(A1, “dddd”) (returns the weekday name for the date in cell A1)

6. Calculating Days between Two Dates using DATEDIF Function

The DATEDIF function helps you to calculate the difference between two dates in various units (days, months, or years):

– Syntax: =DATEDIF(start_date, end_date, unit)

Example: =DATEDIF(A1, B1, “d”) (calculates the number of days between the dates in cells A1 and B1)

Conclusion

Working with dates in Excel can seem overwhelming at first, but once you get familiar with the built-in functions and formulas, you’ll be able to perform a wide range of calculations effortlessly. Practice these techniques to enhance your Excel skills!
