7 Ways to Support a Partner with Anxiety

Living with anxiety can be an incredibly challenging experience, both for the person suffering and their loved ones. Supporting a partner who has anxiety requires empathy, understanding, and patience. Here are seven ways you can offer support:

1. Educate Yourself: Learn about anxiety, its symptoms, and how it affects your partner’s daily life. Understanding the struggles they face will help you provide thoughtful and appropriate support.

2. Be Patient: Anxiety can manifest in various ways, including irritability, indecisiveness, or trouble sleeping. Keep this in mind when dealing with your partner’s behaviors and maintain your patience.

3. Offer a Comforting Presence: Sometimes, just being there for your partner can make all the difference. Offer physical touch, like hugs or holding hands, and let them know you’re there for them without trying to “fix” their anxiety.

4. Validate Their Feelings: Acknowledge and validate your partner’s fears and feelings related to their anxiety, even if they seem irrational to you. Doing so can help them feel seen and understood.

5. Encourage Professional Help: If necessary, encourage your partner to seek professional help in managing their anxiety through therapy or medication.

6. Create a Safe Space: Help your partner create a comfortable environment where they feel safe expressing their needs or feelings without fear of judgment.

7. Practice Self-Care: Remember that taking care of yourself is essential in being able to support others effectively. Ensure you’re addressing your own emotions and self-care needs so that you can better support your partner during times of heightened anxiety.

Supporting a partner with anxiety is not always easy but taking these steps will help you navigate this journey together with compassion, empathy, and understanding.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
