6 Ways to Preserve Fresh Parsley

Parsley, a versatile and aromatic herb, adds a special touch to various dishes with its distinct, fresh flavor. However, keeping it fresh for an extended period can be challenging. When you buy or grow more parsley than you can immediately use, you’ll want to store it correctly to preserve its taste, texture, and nutritional benefits. Here are six ways to keep your parsley fresh and flavorful for as long as possible.

1. Refrigeration

To store fresh parsley in the refrigerator, start by thoroughly washing the herb and gently shaking off excess water. Next, wrap the damp parsley in a clean paper towel. Place the wrapped bundle in a resealable plastic bag or an airtight container with a little ventilation; then refrigerate it. Stored this way, parsley can last up to two weeks.

2. Freezing in Ice Cube Trays

Another method to preserve your fresh parsley is by freezing it in ice cube trays. First, thoroughly wash your parsley and remove excess water as stated earlier. Then, finely chop the herb and divide it among the sections of a clean ice cube tray—each partition should be about three-quarters full of chopped parsley. Fill each section with cold water or broth and place the tray in the freezer until solid. Once frozen, transfer the parsley cubes to a resealable plastic bag for easy storage. Pop one of these cubes next time you need herbs for soups or other cooked dishes.

3. Oil-Freezing Technique

Using oil to freeze your parsley is another excellent option for preserving this herb while maintaining its flavor profile. Wash and chop your fresh parsley before placing it into a food processor along with olive oil – using a ratio of roughly 1 cup of tightly-packed herbs per 2 cups of oil – and blending until smooth. Pour the herb-oil mixture into ice cube trays or silicone molds and freeze until solid. Like the previous method, these oil-based parsley cubes can be stored in resealable plastic bags for ease of use whenever you need a fresh burst of parsley flavor in your dishes.

4. Drying Parsley

If you prefer dried herbs to fresh ones, simply tie small bundles of clean, washed parsley together at the stems and hang them upside down in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight as it can damage the herb’s nutrients. Leave the bundles to dry for 1-2 weeks, depending on the humidity in your area. Afterward, crumble the dried leaves and store them in an airtight container for up to a year.

5. Microwave Drying

To dry parsley more quickly than traditional air-drying, consider using a microwave for instant results. Begin by washing and patting dry the parsley leaves before placing them between two sheets of clean paper towels. Microwave on a low-power setting for 30 seconds until crispy but not burnt. Crumble the dried leaves and store them in an airtight container.

6. Freeze-Drying

For those with access to a home freeze-dryer or dehydrator with a freeze-drying setting, this can be an ideal way to preserve your fresh parsley while maintaining its nutritious properties and flavor. Place cleaned and dried parsley leaves onto trays and follow your appliance’s instructions for freeze-drying herbs. Once fully dried, store the herbs in an airtight container or vacuum-sealed bag.

In conclusion, there are myriad ways to preserve fresh parsley—from refrigeration and freezing to various drying methods—allowing you to enjoy this vibrant herb’s flavors and health benefits all year round. Choose the method that suits your culinary needs best, or experiment with different techniques to broaden your culinary horizons even further!
