6 Easy Ways to Test Blue Light Glasses

In today’s digital age, we spend a large portion of our day staring at screens, which emit blue light that can cause eye strain, blurred vision, and even disrupt our sleep. Blue light glasses are becoming more popular as a means to combat these issues. If you’re considering investing in a pair, it’s important to make sure they’re actually effective in blocking blue light. Here are six easy ways to test if your blue light glasses really work.

1. Compare with Regular Glasses

One simple way is to compare your blue light glasses to regular glasses without any blue light blocking features. Hold your blue light glasses in front of the screen while wearing your regular glasses and observe if there is any difference in color or glare. This can help you determine the extent of blue light protection provided by your new eyewear.

2. The Torch Test

Using a blue LED flashlight or laser pointer, you can check the effectiveness of your blue light glasses simply by shining the torch or laser through the lens and observing the beam on a white surface. If you see a significant reduction in the intensity of the blue beam, it indicates that your glasses are successfully blocking the harmful rays.

3. Smartphone App Test

Several apps have been developed that allow users to test their blue light glasses’ performance (e.g., Blue Light Filter Test or Iris Blue Light Test). To use these apps, download them onto your smartphone and follow the instructions given. Most apps will involve comparing screen colors with and without wearing your glasses, allowing you to determine their effectiveness.

4. Digital Eye Strain Measurements

If you have access to professional optometry equipment, some machines like Lensometers or Focimeters can accurately measure your lenses’ ability to block certain wavelengths, including those associated with digital eye strain due to blue light exposure.

5. Look for Certifications

Some reputable brands offer technical documentation along with their packaging that certifies the percentage of blue light blocked. Check for any certifications or lab reports provided with your glasses to ensure that you’re getting a quality product that offers real protection.

6. Sleep Quality Analysis

Sleep disruption is often associated with late-night blue light exposure. Using sleep tracking apps or devices, monitor your sleep patterns before and after using blue light glasses in the evening. If you notice an improvement in your sleep quality, it’s a good indication that your glasses are working as intended.

In conclusion, these six methods will help you quickly verify if your blue light glasses truly offer the protection they claim. Incorporating them into your daily routine can help protect your eyes and improve your overall health by reducing eye strain, headaches, and visual fatigue due to excessive screen time. Remember always to invest in a high-quality pair from a reputable brand to ensure maximum benefits and long-lasting comfort.
