5 Ways to Survive a School or Workplace Shooting

Introduction

The harsh reality of today’s world is that shootings at schools and workplaces have become an all-too-common occurrence. It’s essential that we equip ourselves with the knowledge and strategies necessary to face such incidents in case they happen. In this article, we’ll discuss five ways you can increase your chances of survival in the event of a school or workplace shooting.

1. Be Prepared

Know your surroundings and be familiar with exit routes and emergency plans. Make it a habit to identify the location of emergency exits and potential hiding places in every room you enter, whether it’s at school or work. Preparation can mean the difference between life and death during a critical situation.

2. Run

If you hear gunshots or any unusual activity indicating the start of a shooting, your immediate response should be to flee the area if safely possible. Leave personal belongings behind, maintain a low profile, and move quickly towards the nearest exit or out of harm’s way. Help others escape if possible, but prioritize your own safety.

3. Hide

If you cannot escape safely, quickly find a suitable hiding place. Preferably, choose a room with a door that can be locked or barricaded from the inside. Turn off lights, silence your phone, and stay as quiet as possible. If you’re in an open area such as a hallway or office space, look for furniture or other objects to create an improvised barrier.

4. Fight

As a last resort if confronted by the shooter, act decisively and attempt to overpower them using makeshift weapons available at hand (e.g., chairs, scissors, fire extinguishers). While this is not ideal, taking defensive action could save your life and others’. Remember that you are fighting for survival.

5. Alert Authorities and Follow Instructions

When safe to do so, call 911 (or appropriate emergency services) and provide them with accurate information about the situation. When law enforcement officers arrive, follow their instructions closely. Keep your hands visible at all times to avoid being mistaken for the shooter.

Conclusion

Though none of us want to contemplate the possibility of experiencing a shooting, in this day and age, it is crucial that we all be prepared. By understanding and implementing these five strategies, you can increase your chances of surviving and helping others in a school or workplace shooting. Educate yourself, stay alert, and be ready to act when necessary.
