4 Ways to Take Care of a Garter Snake

Garter snakes are fascinating creatures that make excellent pets, especially for first-time snake owners. These non-venomous reptiles are known for their vibrant colors and gentle disposition. If you’ve recently welcomed a garter snake into your home or are considering adopting one, it’s crucial to know the best ways to care for your new scaly friend. In this article, we will discuss four essential tips for taking care of a garter snake.

1. Create a Comfortable and Safe Enclosure

Your garter snake needs a secure and comfortable living environment. Choose an appropriately-sized glass or plastic terrarium, preferably at least 10 gallons, that provides ample space for your snake to move around, explore, and hide. Install a tight-fitting and secure lid with adequate ventilation to prevent escapes.

Inside the enclosure, maintain a temperature gradient with a warm area between 75-85°F (24-29°C) and a cooler area between 65-75°F (18-24°C). A heat pad or lamp can help achieve this. Use a thermometer at each end of the enclosure to monitor temperatures.

Place suitable substrate, such as reptile-safe coconut husk or aspen shavings, at the bottom of the terrarium for comfort and easy cleaning. Provide hiding spots like artificial caves or hollow logs, and climbing opportunities such as branches or rocks to mimic your garter snake’s natural environment.

2. Feed Your Garter Snake a Nutrient-Rich Diet

Garter snakes have diverse dietary preferences, making them unique among snakes. They can consume worms, insects, small fish, amphibians like frogs and tadpoles, and sometimes pinky mice depending upon their size. Offer food every 3-7 days for juvenile snakes and every 7-10 days for adults.

It’s essential to research specific dietary needs based on your garter snake’s age, size, and species. You can supplement their diet with calcium and multivitamin powders for reptiles to ensure they receive all necessary nutrients.

3. Keep the Enclosure Clean

Maintaining a clean and sanitary environment helps prevent infections and promotes overall health for your garter snake. Remove uneaten food and waste as soon as possible. Every 2-4 weeks, remove the bedding material and replace it with fresh substrate. During this time, clean the enclosure using a reptile-safe disinfectant, rinse thoroughly, and allow it to dry before reintroducing your snake.

4. Handle Your Garter Snake with Care

Garter snakes are generally docile creatures that can tolerate regular handling. However, frequent handling may cause stress for some snakes. Allow your garter snake at least a week to settle into its new environment before attempting to handle it.

When holding your garter snake, be gentle yet firm, always supporting its body with both hands. Keep handling sessions short (5-15 minutes) to minimize stress. Always wash your hands before and after handling your snake to prevent contamination or infections.

By following these four care tips, you’ll be well on your way to forming a healthy bond with your garter snake while ensuring its well-being throughout its life.
