4 Ways to Lower GGT Levels

Introduction:

Gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) is an enzyme that plays a crucial role in the metabolism of amino acids and glutathione. Elevated GGT levels could signal damage to the liver or bile ducts, excessive alcohol consumption, or other health issues like diabetes and heart disease. Here, we will discuss four ways to lower your GGT levels and promote better overall health.

1.Maintain a healthy diet:

Diet plays a significant part in managing your GGT levels. High-fat diets can lead to excessive weight gain and fatty liver, eventually causing an increase in GGT levels. To maintain healthy GGT levels, you should consume a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Avoid foods high in saturated fats, sugar, and salt, as they could contribute to increased GGT levels.

2.Exercise regularly:

Physical activity is essential for optimal health and can even help regulate your liver enzyme levels. Regular exercise helps improve blood circulation, boosts the immune system, and reduces inflammation—all factors contributing to maintaining healthy GGT levels. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic exercise per week.

3.Limit alcohol consumption:

Excessive alcohol consumption can cause significant damage to the liver and lead to elevated GGT levels. To protect your liver health and maintain normal enzyme levels, it’s important to limit your alcohol intake or avoid it altogether. It’s generally recommended that men should not drink more than two standard alcoholic drinks per day, while women should limit their intake to one standard alcoholic drink daily.

4.Regular checkups and medication when necessary:

Some medical conditions can cause higher GGT levels; therefore, it’s important to monitor your liver health regularly through routine checkups. Discuss any concerns with your healthcare provider and follow their recommendations on any necessary medication or treatments to manage your GGT levels effectively. In cases where an underlying medical issue is causing elevated GGT levels, treating the root cause can help regulate enzyme production and maintain normal levels.
