4 Ways to Keep Squirrels Away

Squirrels can be cute and entertaining, but these small creatures can quickly turn into a nuisance when they start chewing on your garden plants, stealing birdseed, or nesting in your attic. To protect your property and maintain peace in your backyard, here are four effective ways to keep squirrels away.

1. Use Squirrel Repellents

There are several squirrel repellents available on the market that can help deter these critters. Commercial repellents typically contain ingredients such as capsaicin or essential oils, which cause discomfort or irritation to squirrels when they come in contact with them. Spraying your garden plants, bird feeders, or other target areas with these products can discourage squirrels from trespassing.

In addition to commercial products, you can also use homemade solutions such as a mixture of water and hot pepper sauce or garlic cloves. Remember to reapply the repellents after rainfall for continued effectiveness.

2. Remove Food Sources

Squirrels are primarily attracted to your yard because of food sources like fruits and vegetables from your garden, birdseed from feeders, or dog/cat food left outside. By removing these sources, you’ll make your yard less appealing to them. For bird feeders, use squirrel-proof options that have a baffle system preventing them from accessing the seeds. Store pet food indoors or in airtight containers and pick up any fallen fruits or vegetables from your garden.

3. Install Barriers

Physical barriers are another effective method of keeping squirrels away from specific areas of your property. If you have fruit trees or vegetable gardens where squirrels tend to feast, consider installing netting or wire mesh around these areas. Make sure the mesh is small enough to prevent squirrel access but not so tight that it harms the plants.

For attic infestations, seal off all entry points with sturdy materials like wire mesh or metal flashing. Trim tree branches that may provide easy access to your roof and gutters.

4. Use Decoy Predators

Introduce decoy predators in your yard to trick squirrels into thinking they are in danger. Life-like owl or hawk statues give the illusion of a predator lurking nearby, which can deter squirrels from staying in the area for long. Place the decoys in strategic locations, like near bird feeders or tall trees, and move them periodically to maintain their effectiveness.

Alternatively, if you have a pet dog or cat, their presence can also help keep squirrels at bay. However, it’s essential to supervise pets when they’re outside to ensure they don’t cause any harm to wildlife.

In conclusion, employing a combination of these four methods can significantly reduce squirrel activity in your yard and keep your property safe from damage caused by these agile animals. Remember that it’s essential to use humane techniques and be persistent in your efforts to deter these ever-adaptable creatures.
