3 Ways to Wash Hair Extensions

Hair extensions can be a lifesaver for those who want to add volume or length to their natural hair. However, like our own hair, hair extensions require proper care and maintenance to keep them looking fresh and beautiful. Washing your hair extensions is an essential part of that care routine. In this article, we will discuss three effective ways to wash your hair extensions and some tips for maintaining them.

1. Hand Washing Hair Extensions

Hand washing is perhaps the gentlest and most effective method of cleaning hair extensions. This method involves using your hands to wash the extensions, helping prevent damage such as tangling or shedding. Follow these simple steps:

a. Fill a basin or sink with lukewarm water.

b. Mix a small amount of mild shampoo into the water.

c. Gently submerge your hair extensions in the water, making sure they are fully wet.

d. Use your fingers to work the shampoo throughout the extensions, focusing on the areas near the clips or bonds.

e. Thoroughly rinse the extensions under running water until all shampoo is removed.

f. Gently squeeze out excess water and place your hair extensions on a towel to air dry.

2. Co-washing Hair Extensions

Co-washing (short for “conditioner washing”) involves cleaning hair extensions using only conditioner instead of shampoo. This method can be beneficial for those with very dry or damaged extensions as it helps retain more moisture within the strands.

a. Wet your hair extensions under running lukewarm water.

b. Apply a generous amount of moisturizing conditioner onto the hair from top to bottom.

c. Using your fingers, distribute the conditioner evenly through each strand.

d. Allow the conditioner to sit on the hair for a few minutes before rinsing thoroughly.

e. Gently squeeze out excess water and lay your extensions flat on a towel to air dry.

3. Machine Washing Hair Extensions

Though not ideal for all hair extension types, machine washing can be a convenient option for synthetic or less delicate extensions. Always consult the manufacturer’s instructions before attempting this method.

a. Place your hair extensions in a mesh laundry bag to prevent tangling.

b. Set your washing machine to the most delicate cycle and use lukewarm water.

c. Add a small amount of mild detergent or specialized extension-washing solution to the machine.

d. Begin the wash and rinse cycle, making sure not to use high spin settings or any form of heat.

e. Remove the extensions from the mesh bag and gently squeeze out excess water.

f. Lay your hair extensions flat on a towel to air dry.

By following these methods and practicing proper hair extension care, you can maintain their beauty and longevity. Remember always to detangle your extensions before washing, avoid excessive heat styling, and use recommended products for best results. Now go out and enjoy your beautiful, clean hair extensions!
