3 Ways to Use Oblate Discs

Introduction

Oblate discs, also known as oblaat or edible film, are thin edible sheets made from a water-soluble blend of starches. These versatile discs are tasteless, dissolve quickly in liquid, and can be used for a variety of purposes, both culinary and beyond. In this article, we will explore three unique ways to use oblate discs to enhance your daily experiences.

1. Flavorful Medicine Pouches

One common struggle is swallowing pills or supplements due to their unpleasant taste or large size. With oblate discs, you can create small pouches to contain the medication and bypass the unpleasantness entirely. Simply place the pill or supplement in the center of an oblate disc, fold it into a small pouch by enclosing the edges together, and dampen the edge with water to seal it shut. Now you can swallow it just like any other soft food item without the discomfort of tasting the medication.

2. Garnishes, Wrappings and Presentation

For creative chefs looking to elevate their plating and presentation skills, cutting oblate discs into intricate shapes or using them as wraps is an inventive approach. Thinly sliced fruits, vegetables, cheeses or even thinly sliced meats can be presented in artistic ways on top or between oblate discs. Alternatively, use oblate discs as a wrapper for delicate ingredients such as sushi rolls or cold appetizers that need an extra layer of protection before being displayed or served.

Another option for embellishing dishes is to mix food coloring or edible glitter into a small amount of water and gently paint patterns onto the oblate disc before arranging your chosen ingredients around or on top of them.

3. Molecular Gastronomy

Molecular gastronomy enthusiasts can push the boundaries of traditional cooking techniques by incorporating oblate discs into their repertoire. By using an oblate disc as a base or containment system, you can encase liquids, powders, or small granules for a surprising burst of flavor once the edible film dissolves in the mouth.

For example, try crafting a “liquid salad” by pureeing vegetables like cucumber, tomato, or bell pepper and spooning small portions into oblate discs. Twist and seal the edges shut to create little pouches, which can then be served atop a bed of greens or as an innovative amuse-bouche. The possibilities are endless as you experiment with different flavors and textures.

Conclusion

Oblate discs provide an incredibly versatile canvas for anyone looking to challenge traditional culinary techniques or simply seek help with making swallowing medications more palatable. With their tasteless, dissolvable nature and endless potential for interesting applications, oblate discs can bring a touch of excitement and innovation to your everyday routines.
