3 Ways to Use and Read an Outside Micrometer

Introduction:

An outside micrometer is a versatile and accurate measuring tool used by machinists, engineers, and hobbyists to measure the dimensions of various objects, typically focusing on the width, diameter, or thickness. In this article, we will discuss three different ways to use and read an outside micrometer to help you effectively measure any object you encounter.

1. Measuring External Dimensions

The primary function of an outside micrometer is to measure the external dimensions of an object. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Clean and inspect the object you want to measure. Make sure it’s free of burrs, dirt, or other contaminants that might affect your measurement.
  2. Open the micrometer’s jaws by rotating the thimble until the gap between them accommodates the object.
  3. Place the object between the anvil and spindle jaws, ensuring even contact with both surfaces.
  4. Close the jaws onto the object by rotating thimble clockwise until a gentle resistance is felt (do not overtighten).
  5. Write down your reading by noting down each scale on the micrometer: main scale, vernier scale, and thimble scale.

2. Comparing Two Identical Objects

When comparing the dimensions of two identical objects or manufacturing parts produced identically, follow these steps:

  1. Measure one object using method #1 (Measuring External Dimensions) mentioned above.
  2. Without resetting your micrometer reading from measuring the first object, adjust your micrometer so that it lightly grips objects between its jaws.
  3. Place the second object between jaws and assess how well it aligns with your previous measurement.
  4. Slight variations will signify differences in size, especially if you cannot completely close your jaws without applying force on micrometer thimble.

3. Using a Micrometer Stand for Stability

If you need to take accurate and consistent measurements, a micrometer stand can help provide stability and reduce errors due to hand movement or inconsistent pressure applied to the micrometer.

  1. Mount your outside micrometer onto the micrometer stand, ensuring it’s held securely in place.
  2. Adjust the position of your micrometer on the stand so that it is level and easy to read.
  3. Follow method #1 (Measuring External Dimensions) for taking your measurement, but now using the added stability of the micrometer stand.

Conclusion:

A well-calibrated outside micrometer can deliver precise measurements when used correctly. By following these three methods, you will have a solid foundation for using and reading an outside micrometer effectively. Always remember to handle the tool with care and store it properly when not in use, ensuring it maintains its accuracy for years to come.
