3 Ways to Switch to a Dvorak Keyboard Layout

If you’re looking to increase your typing speed or alleviate the stress on your fingers and wrists, switching to a Dvorak keyboard layout might be worth considering. The Dvorak layout was designed with efficiency in mind, placing the most commonly used keys under the strongest fingers and keeping them in a home row. This means that transitioning to a Dvorak layout can potentially increase typing speeds and decrease the risk of repetitive strain injuries. In this article, we’ll explore three ways to switch to a Dvorak keyboard layout.

1. Change Your Physical Keyboard

One straightforward way to switch to a Dvorak layout is by purchasing a physical Dvorak keyboard. These keyboards have their keys arranged in the ergonomic fashion that the Dvorak design intended. To make the switch, simply purchase a new keyboard and plug it into your computer or mobile device.

Although physical Dvorak keyboards may be more difficult to find than traditional ones, numerous online retailers offer specialized models specifically built with this layout in mind. Consider investing in a high-quality keyboard, as it can make switching layouts and adapting your typing habits much more comfortable.

2. Modify Your Existing Keyboard

Another option is modifying your existing keyboard by physically rearranging the keys or applying stickers with the Dvorak layout. Keyboards with removable keycaps can be rearranged rather easily, making it possible for you to change the placement of individual keys manually.

When rearranging keycaps or applying stickers, consider consulting an image of a standard Dvorak layout for reference. It’s important to ensure that all keys are correctly placed before attempting to use your modified keyboard, as this will help make the transition smoother.

3. Change Your Computer’s Software Settings

If you’d rather not purchase or modify your existing keyboard, there’s always the option of altering your computer’s software settings instead. Both Windows and macOS have built-in options to change the keyboard layout, making it relatively easy to switch to a Dvorak layout.

To change your keyboard layout on Windows, navigate to Settings > Time & Language > Language. Click on your default language and select “Options.” Under the “Keyboards” section, click “Add a keyboard,” and choose “United States-Dvorak” from the list.

On macOS, head to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Keyboard. Click on the “Input Sources” tab, then press “+” to add a new input source. Choose “Dvorak” from the list, and enable the “Show Input menu in menu bar” checkbox for easy access.

Closing Thoughts

Switching to a Dvorak keyboard layout can improve typing speed and reduce strain on the hands and wrists. By choosing between purchasing a new keyboard, modifying an existing one, or changing software settings, users have various methods to make this ergonomic change. Remember that there may be a learning curve when adopting a new layout, but with persistence and practice, many users find that the Dvorak layout is an efficient alternative to conventional keyboards.
