3 Ways to Store Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe Vera is a versatile plant that has been used for its medicinal and beautifying properties for centuries. The gel found inside the leaves of this plant can be used to treat various skin ailments, soothe sunburns, and even help with digestion. However, preserving Aloe Vera gel after extraction can be somewhat tricky. Here, we discuss three effective ways to store Aloe Vera gel and keep it fresh for longer.

1. Refrigeration

One of the easiest and most effective ways to store Aloe Vera gel is by refrigeration. Simply scoop the gel from the leaf into a clean, air-tight container, ensuring that it is free from any impurities or residue. The container should ideally be made of glass or food-grade plastic. Once you’ve secured the lid on the container, place it in your refrigerator.

Refrigerating Aloe Vera gel not only helps maintain its freshness but also prolongs its shelf life significantly — typically up to 2-3 weeks. Remember to use a clean spoon or spatula every time you take some gel out of the container, as this will help prevent contamination.

2. Freezing

If you have a large quantity of Aloe Vera gel or want to store it for a more extended period, freezing is an excellent option. You can freeze Aloe Vera in small portions using an ice cube tray or similar container. This method allows you to use only what you need without thawing the entire batch.

Once frozen, transfer the Aloe Vera cubes into a freezer-safe container or plastic bag and store them in your freezer. Frozen Aloe Vera can last up to 6 months before losing some of its properties. Thaw the cubes at room temperature whenever you need them and make sure to consume or use them within 24 hours.

3. Mixing with Natural Preservatives

Another way to extend the shelf life of Aloe Vera gel is by mixing it with natural preservatives. Vitamin E oil and citric acid are two excellent options because they are effective at inhibiting bacterial and fungal growth, which can spoil the gel.

To use this method, add 400 IU of Vitamin E oil or 1/4 teaspoon of citric acid per 1 cup of Aloe Vera gel. Mix the ingredients thoroughly and store the gel in a clean, air-tight container. By adding natural preservatives, Aloe Vera gel can maintain its freshness for up to a month when stored in a cool, dark place or your refrigerator.

In conclusion, proper storage of Aloe Vera gel is essential for preserving its properties and maximizing its benefits. Whether you choose refrigeration, freezing, or the addition of natural preservatives, make sure always to use clean tools and containers to prevent contamination and spoilage. With these methods in mind, your Aloe Vera gel will stay ready for use whenever you need it.
