3 Ways to Make Your Candles Last Longer

Candles have been a go-to item for those seeking comfort, relaxation, and ambience. The soft flicker of candlelight can create a cozy and warm atmosphere that many people find soothing. As a result, it’s not surprising that people want to make their candles last as long as possible. Here are three ways you can maximize the life of your candles.

1. Keep the wick trimmed

One of the simplest but most overlooked ways to prolong the life of your candle is by regularly trimming the wick. Maintaining the right wick length (approximately ¼ inch) ensures that your candle burns evenly, preventing it from burning too quickly or unevenly.

Another advantage of keeping the wick trimmed is improved air quality in your home; a shorter wick produces less smoke and soot, ensuring cleaner burning. Make sure you trim the wick every 4 hours of burning time.

2. Store candles properly

Proper storage goes a long way in preserving the quality and longevity of your candles. First and foremost, keep candles away from direct sunlight and heat sources (like radiators) to prevent them from melting or losing their shape. The ideal storage spot for candles is in a cool, dry place with minimal temperature fluctuations.

Additionally, store scented candles with their lids on when not in use to help maintain fragrance potency as the essential oils used in some candles can evaporate over time if left exposed to air.

3. Burn time matters

Improper burn times can contribute significantly to shortening your candle’s lifespan. When you light a candle for the first time, make sure you let it burn long enough for the entire surface layer of wax to melt completely; this is called a full melt pool and helps prevent tunneling – when a hole forms in the center of the candle rather than melting evenly outwards.

It’s also necessary not to burn your candles for too long. Generally, it’s recommended to avoid burning a candle for more than 4 hours at a time. Long burning periods can cause the wick to mushroom, producing more smoke and soot, contributing to uneven burning and potential damage to the holder or surface beneath.

In conclusion, these simple but effective measures will help prolong the life of your candles and allow you to enjoy their warm glow and soothing ambiance even longer. Society has come a long way from depending solely on candles for illumination, but their presence in our homes is still cherished – with proper care, they can remain an enduring comfort in our lives.
