3 Ways to Do Squared on a Keyboard

In mathematics, there often comes a time when you need to represent the square of a number, that is, a number multiplied by itself. On paper, it’s easy to show this—you just write the number and place a small “2” in the top right corner as a superscript. Unfortunately, typing this symbol isn’t so straightforward on most keyboards. Don’t worry! In this article, we’ll discuss three ways to enter the squared symbol when using your computer’s keyboard.

1. Keyboard Shortcut

One of the quickest and easiest ways to insert the squared symbol in your text is by using keyboard shortcuts. The exact shortcuts may vary depending on your device and operating system, so here are some common ones:

– Windows: On a Windows machine, you can press “Alt” + “253” or “Alt” + “0178” with your numeric keypad enabled. This will insert the squared symbol (²) into your document.

– Mac: For macOS users, simply press “Option” + “00B2” to add the squared symbol to your text.

Remember always to use these shortcuts while writing in an application that supports special characters.

2. Copy and Paste

Another easy method for adding the squared symbol in a text field is by copying it from an existing source and pasting it where you want it.

– First, locate an example of the squared symbol either online or from an existing document.

– Highlight the squared character with your cursor.

– Use the appropriate copy command for your device (Ctrl + C for Windows or Command + C for Mac).

– Navigate back to where you want to add the squared symbol and paste it using Ctrl + V for Windows or Command + V for Mac.

Copying and pasting may be useful if keyboard shortcuts aren’t working correctly or if you need flexibility with multiple special characters.

3. Use Symbol Menus

Most word processors and office applications offer a symbol menu where you can access numerous special characters, including the squared symbol:

– Open your preferred application (such as Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or Apple Pages).

– Click on the “Insert” tab or menu.

– Navigate to the “Symbols” or “Special Characters” section.

– Browse through the available symbols or search for “squared” or “superscript 2.”

– Select the squared symbol and click “Insert” (or follow the particular application’s instructions).

Once inserted from the menu, you can easily use and modify the squared symbol just like any other character.

In conclusion, knowing how to type squared on a keyboard is vital for a smooth writing experience when dealing with mathematical expressions. By using any of these three methods—keyboard shortcuts, copy-paste technique, or accessing the symbol menu – you’ll be well-equipped to insert the squared symbol whenever you need it.
