3 Ways to Create a Tickler File

A tickler file is a simple yet effective organizational tool that helps you keep track of tasks, appointments, and deadlines in a timely manner. The name comes from the idea that the file “tickles” your memory, ensuring that you stay on top of your responsibilities. There are several approaches to create a tickler file to suit your personal preferences and work style. In this article, we will discuss three ways to create your own tickler file system.

1. The 43-Folder System

One of the most popular tickler file systems is the 43-folder method, which consists of 31 folders for each day of the month and an additional 12 for each month. To set up this system:

– Label 31 folders with the numbers 1 through 31, representing each day of the month.

– Label another 12 folders with the months from January to December.

– Arrange your daily folders in numerical order inside a drawer or box, followed by the monthly folders in chronological order.

To use this system, place documents or reminders for tasks and appointments into their designated folders based on when they need to be addressed. Each day, check the folder corresponding to the current date and transfer any remaining items to future folders as needed. This ensures that nothing falls through the cracks.

2. Digital Tickler Files

If you prefer a paperless approach, consider creating a digital tickler file using your preferred software or app. There are several tools available that can help you set up an online tickler file system:

– Google Drive: You can create a folder structure within Google Drive similar to the 43-folder system discussed earlier.

– Evernote: Use Evernote’s notebook and note structure for organizing documents or reminders by tagging them with dates or months.

– Task management apps: Apps like Todoist or Trello have reminder capabilities that can be customized as per your preference.

Remember to enable notifications for your chosen method so you never miss a task or appointment.

3. Hybrid Tickler File

For those who enjoy the best of both worlds, a hybrid tickler file combines the physical and digital aspects of organization:

– Determine what tasks, appointments, or documents will be kept physically in folders and what will be managed digitally.

– Use a physical 43-folder system for tangible items but set up digital reminders using a calendar app or task manager.

– Sync your digital tickler file with your phone or other devices to stay up-to-date with notifications and reminders.

Ultimately, the way you create your tickler file will depend on your individual needs and preferences. Whether you choose to go fully analog, fully digital, or adopt a hybrid approach, the key is to remain consistent in using and updating the system. With daily dedication, your tickler file will keep you organized and help make completing tasks and meeting deadlines a breeze.
