3 Ways to Convert an Improper Fraction to Percent

When working with improper fractions, it can be tricky to convert them into percentages. Though the conversion might seem complicated at first, there are actually a few different ways to approach the problem. In this article, we’ll explore three simple methods for converting an improper fraction into a percentage.

1. Convert to a Mixed Number

The first method involves converting the improper fraction into a mixed number, and then converting that mixed number into a percentage. Here’s how:

Step 1: Convert the improper fraction into a mixed number by dividing the numerator by the denominator.

Step 2: Write down the quotient as a whole number and keep the remainder as the new numerator.

Step 3: Create a new fraction with the remainder as the numerator and the original denominator.

Step 4: Divide the new fraction by 100 (or multiply by its reciprocal, which is 1/100).

Step 5: Add the whole number percentage (the quotient) to the percentage obtained from the fractional part (product of step 4).

2. Divide and Multiply by 100

Another way to convert an improper fraction to a percentage is by dividing the numerator by the denominator and then multiplying the result by 100. Follow these steps:

Step 1: Divide the numerator by the denominator to obtain a decimal result.

Step 2: Multiply that decimal result by 100.

Step 3: Round off if necessary, and add “%” symbol.

3. Cross-Multiply

This method involves cross-multiplying your given improper fraction with an equivalent fraction that has a denominator of 100. Here’s how it works:

Step 1: Set up an equation with your improper fraction on one side (e.g., A/B) and an unknown numerator over a denominator of 100 (e.g., X/100) on the other side.

Step 2: Cross-multiply A/B and X/100 (i.e., A * 100 = B * X).

Step 3: Solve for X (i.e., divide both sides by B).

Step 4: Round off if necessary, and add “%” symbol.

Conclusion

While there are multiple ways to convert an improper fraction into a percentage, the best approach will depend on your comfort level with the different mathematical concepts. Each of the methods we’ve discussed will yield the desired result, so choose the one that works best for you and you’ll be converting fractions like a pro in no time!
