3 Ways to Clean a Composite Deck

A well-maintained composite deck can be an attractive and practical addition to your home. Composite decking is popular for its low maintenance requirements, but it still needs periodic cleaning to maintain its appearance and extend its lifespan. In this article, we will discuss three methods of cleaning a composite deck, helping you keep your outdoor living space looking brand new.

1. Regular Sweeping and Rinsing

The easiest way to keep your composite deck clean is by routinely sweeping it with a broom and rinsing it down with water. Sweep away dirt, debris, and leaves from the surface every week or before they accumulate on the deck. After sweeping, use a garden hose to rinse the surface thoroughly to wash off any remaining dirt or pollen.

This method is particularly useful in preventing the buildup of mold and mildew, which can be common occurrences on wet or damp surfaces. Make sure that water drains efficiently from the deck surface by removing any obstructions, ensuring that no standing water remains.

2. Using a Mild Soap Solution

For stubborn stains or dirt buildup, using a mild soap solution can help clean your composite deck more effectively. Mix warm water with a small amount of gentle dish soap in a bucket, creating a soapy mixture.

Dip a soft-bristle brush into the solution and gently scrub the stained areas of the deck until clean. Be careful not to use excessive force while scrubbing; this will help prevent scratches on the surface of the decking material.

After scrubbing, rinse off any remaining soap suds with clean water using a garden hose. Ensure that no soap scum or residue remains on the surface of the decking.

3. Specialized Composite Deck Cleaners

If you’re dealing with particularly stubborn stains or deep-seated grime, you may need to use specialized composite deck cleaning products specifically formulated for this purpose. Many of these cleaners are eco-friendly and safe for use on composite materials.

Before applying any cleaning product, always read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Most cleaners will need to be diluted in water before application, and a soft brush can be used for scrubbing. To prevent any damage to your deck, avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that could potentially void your warranty.

Additionally, you may choose to use a power washer, but be cautious; if used improperly, it can cause damage to the decking material. Always consult the manufacturer’s guidelines for using a power washer on the specific composite material and keep the pressure below 3100 psi.

In conclusion, regular maintenance and cleaning of a composite deck are essential to keep it looking great and prolonging its life. Incorporate these methods into your routine, and you’ll have a beautiful outdoor living space for years to come.
