3 Simple Ways to Open an MP4 File on PC or Mac

Introduction:

MP4, also known as MPEG-4 Part 14, is a digital multimedia container format most commonly used to store video and audio files. It has become the standard format for online video streaming and sharing, thanks to its high-quality compression and compatibility with various devices. If you’ve stumbled upon an MP4 file and want to play it on your PC or Mac, here are three simple ways to open it without any hassle.

1. Utilize Built-in Media Players:

Both Windows and macOS come with pre-installed media players that can handle MP4 files with ease.

– For Windows users: Windows Media Player is the default media player in the Windows operating system. Simply double-click on the MP4 file, and it should open with Windows Media Player by default. If not, right-click on the file, select ‘Open With,’ then choose ‘Windows Media Player’ from the list.

– For Mac users: QuickTime Player is macOS’s native media player. Similar to Windows Media Player, double-click on the MP4 file to play it using QuickTime Player. Alternatively, you can right-click on the file, select ‘Open With,’ and choose ‘QuickTime Player.’

2. Install Third-Party Media Players:

There are several third-party media players available that provide more features and support a broader range of formats than their built-in counterparts. Two popular options are:

– VLC Media Player: A free, open-source media player that works across platforms (Windows, macOS, Linux) and supports a wide range of media formats. To use VLC for playing your MP4 files, download and install it from www.videolan.org/vlc/. After installation, you can either drag and drop your MP4 file onto VLC’s interface or use the ‘File’ menu to open your video.

– KMPlayer: Another free media player that supports various file formats, including MP4. Download and install KMPlayer at www.kmplayer.com for Windows or macOS. Once installed, open your MP4 files by drag and drop or through the ‘File’ menu.

3. Convert the MP4 File to a Different Format:

If, by any chance, you encounter compatibility issues or difficulty playing your MP4 file, you may consider converting it to another format. For this purpose, several online and offline video converters are available.

– Online-Convert.com: A free online video converter that supports a variety of file formats. Visit www.online-convert.com, select your desired output format and upload your MP4 file to start the conversion process. It’s worth noting that this method would require an active internet connection.

– Freemake Video Converter: An easy-to-use video converter software for Windows users that supports multiple formats like AVI, MKV, WMV, and MOV. Download and install Freemake Video Converter at www.freemake.com/free_video_converter/. After installation, launch the software, add your MP4 file, select the desired output format, and click ‘Convert.’

Conclusion:

Opening an MP4 file on your PC or Mac should be a simple process with these three methods. Choosing the right media player or converting the file to a compatible format will ensure smooth playback of any MP4 video without hassle.
