Product Review of Zinn Education Project: Democracy and Citizenship
Teachers should know that this collection covers a wide range of historical topics with a focus on democracy and citizenship. There are teaching activities that are free to download and an extensive list of suggested books and films (some for purchase). Teachers can find lessons to supplement a number of different units in United States history such as the Vietnam War, the Cherokee Removal, Japanese-American internment, and Seneca Falls. All of the lessons emphasize how particular sub-groups were treated and the rights and responsibilities of individuals and the society as a whole. Highlights of the collection include a role play of the Constitutional Convention and a tea party and mock trial about Japanese Internment. Also included are suggested discussion questions for more current topics (Carter, Bush, Reagan) covered in the later chapters of A People’s History of the United States.
