What Users Love About the App
“Duolingo, for me, happens to be the best application for learning languages. It has a very interactive platform with an amazing user interface. It also happens to have a huge trove of languages to learn from. Its rewards base happens to be a big motivation factor for its users. It also supports dying languages like Hawaiian, Navajo by giving extra perks to its users while learning. Apart from the basic lessons, Duolingo offers story exercises to get a better understanding of the language. There are also the Duolingo forums where users can interact with each other on the lessons and increase their knowledge.”
“Duolingo is undoubtedly the best learning app; with it, you can learn more than 50 languages, including Portuguese, English, Italian, and other native languages. It is very didactic, simple, and fun. I have learned a lot with the methodology of teaching Duolingo because I can improve listening, writing, and speaking.”
“The gamification system is definitely a plus to remain motivated (and the best I’ve come across so far)! The stories help you learn idiomatic expressions and words. Even if the learning system is not perfect, you get to memorize words and phrases in a fun way. I will admit it is easier to learn Indo-European languages than Asian languages.”
“I was surprised that the app had a lot of features for having conversations and conversation comprehension. Starting at Unit 2, I started to notice this more. I also think that the podcasts and storylines are a great feature to assist with comprehension.”
“I like how Duolingo makes language learning simple and intuitive by reducing the amount of grammar that you have to deal with and gradually teaches you more and more about how the language works as you level up skills. This makes learning both engaging and to some level game-like, ultimately turning the experience into something fun instead of dull and boring. It doesn’t even feel like work! But my favorite thing by far is the fairly recent feature: Duolingo For Schools. It has made my job as an ESL Teacher easier since it allows me to track the student’s progress and therefore their overall interest in the language. It even helps the students refresh what they learn in class.”
“I like that the lessons are fun and interactive. It feels more like a game than learning a new language. The daily reminders are very helpful for keeping you on track even though they can become too frequent.”
“For the first time, I found an effective and pleasant method to learn English and French. Knowing other languages contributes positively to my business relationships, in my professional and academic development. At the same time, I develop fluently my reading, writing, and oral expression skills in my mother tongue. Since I opened my Duolingo account, I have real control over my educational advances in the idiosyncrasies I am learning. Duolingo allows learning at any time of the day, from the computer, the tablet, or the smartphone. There are also discussion forums in which it is possible to interact with other people and clarify doubts about the language that is being studied. In summary, Duolingo is the best platform to learn languages in a pleasant way, without pressure, with the help of a large network of users, and without the frustrations of the traditional educational system.”
What Users Dislike About the App
“I dislike that it’s hard to specify your exact level of understanding. For example, especially for more advanced speakers, it is not easy to quickly move from one lesson plan to another based on the level of difficulty for you.”
“Duolingo constantly has issues completing lessons! What has to happen for this to get fixed? It constantly loses my progress and goes back to the beginning, or wherever! How do you get these people to fix anything? I am a paying, but a thoroughly disgusted customer.”
“I dislike that many times it has bugs or shows that the students did an assignment but they did not really do it. I mean, it appears like they have finished doing something when they did not do it at all. I wrote my problem and tried to contact their manager or the people in charge and there is no phone number. I can only ask the question in a forum. Some other people told me to send a screenshot of the problem to an email, but it is very difficult to do. How are they going to know which student has the problem and which student doesn’t? It is very frustrating.”
“The sound of dialogues in the story section sometimes doesn’t play on my mobile apps. The web experience is not as fun as the mobile one. I can understand why, but sometimes it’s just easier to use the web version to write long sentences.”
“Although I’ve been using Duolingo and my vocabulary has increased, I don’t feel like my accent is getting better. There is a limit to how far an app can go in that sense, although they do have live tutor help that I have not utilized. For an app, it’s absolutely useful and helpful!”
