Morning May Be the Best Time to Exercise for Weight Loss Benefits

Starting your day with exercise could be the key to shedding those pesky pounds more effectively. Emerging research in the field of chronobiology – the science of body clocks – suggests that mornings are when our bodies may be naturally primed to burn fat more efficiently.

One reason why morning workouts could be more beneficial for weight loss is the body’s hormonal compositions during these hours. Cortisol, a hormone that plays a role in mobilization of fat for energy, peaks in the early morning. Exercising during this peak could enhance the body’s ability to use fat as a fuel source, instead of glycogen stored in muscles.

Moreover, exercising in the morning has been associated with increased activity levels throughout the day. A study published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise found that women who exercised in the morning were more active overall than those who exercised later in the day. This increase in overall daily activity levels could contribute to additional calorie burn and weight loss over time.

Another aspect to consider is fasting state; many people wake up having not eaten for several hours, which means blood sugar and insulin levels are low. Morning exercisers may tap into fat reserves for energy since glycogen stores are diminished after a night’s rest.

The psychological benefits of morning workouts should not be underestimated either. Completing a workout early can provide a sense of accomplishment and set a positive tone for the day. It also eliminates excuses and schedule conflicts that can crop up later, ensuring consistency which is key for sustained weight loss.

It’s important to align exercise timing with personal preference and lifestyle for long-term adherence and success. However, if your primary goal is weight loss and you’re able to fit it into your schedule, consider setting your alarm clock earlier and hitting the gym; it might just give you the edge you need on your weight loss journey.
