How to Make Felt

Felt is a versatile and unique textile that has been used for thousands of years in various cultures around the world. From traditional yurts in Central Asia to contemporary fashion accessories, felt has continued to thrive as a diverse material. This article will guide you through the process of making your own felt using two different methods: wet felting and needle felting. So, let’s dive into the world of felting!

1. Wet Felting Method

Wet felting requires just a few simple tools and materials to create a sturdy, non-woven fabric from wool fibers. Follow these steps to make your own wet felt:

Materials Needed:

1. Wool roving or wool fleece

2. Warm water

3. Soap (preferably an olive oil-based soap)

4. Bubble wrap or bamboo mat

5. Towels

Step-by-Step Process:

1. Begin by laying out your wool fibers on the bubble wrap or bamboo mat, with all fibers running parallel in one direction.

2. Add another layer of wool fibers perpendicular to the first layer, creating a crisscross pattern.

3. Gently wet the layers with warm water, ensuring all fibers are damp but not soaked.

4. Apply a small amount of soap onto your hands and gently press the soap into the damp wool fibers.

5. Start massaging and agitating the wool with gentle circular motions, gradually applying more pressure as the fibers begin to bind together.

6. Once the fibers have begun to matt together, roll up your bubble wrap or bamboo mat with the felt inside and continue rolling it back and forth for approximately 10 minutes.

7. Unroll and check for any loose fibers or weak spots that may require additional rolling or massaging.

8. When your felt has reached the desired thickness and strength, rinse away any remaining soap suds with cold water.

9. Lastly, gently press the felt between towels to remove excess water and lay it flat to air dry.

2. Needle Felting Method

Needle felting, on the other hand, utilizes barbed needles to interlock wool fibers into a condensed material. The following steps will help you create your first needle felted piece:

Materials Needed:

1.  Wool roving or carded wool

2.  A special felting needle (available at various sizes)

3. A foam pad or a brush mat

Step-by-Step Process:

1. Place your wool fibers onto the foam pad or brush mat.

2. Start poking the wool with your felting needle, making sure to always go straight in and out of the fibers.

3. Continue poking the fibers until they begin to matt together, being careful not to hit the pad or mat too hard as it might damage your needle.

4.  Flip your work periodically and apply pressure from different angles to maintain an even density throughout.

5. To create a three-dimensional shape, simply fold and layer your wool as you continue poking it with the needle, molding it into the desired form.

6. Once you’re satisfied with the size and density of your felted piece, gently remove it from the foam pad or brush mat.

With these two methods at hand, you’re ready to embark on your felting journey! Experiment with different shapes, colors, and textures to create unique pieces that showcase your personal style and creativity. Happy felting!
