How to Dry Mount a Print: 12 Steps

Drying mounting is a popular technique used by artists, photographers and hobbyists to display their artwork and prints. The process involves attaching the print to a rigid backing using heat-sensitive adhesive, ensuring a flat and professional-looking result. In this article, we will explore the 12 steps to successfully dry mount a print.

1. Gather your materials: To dry mount a print, you will need a print, mounting board, adhesive tissue or film, release paper, a tacking iron or press, and a clean workspace.

2. Choose a suitable mounting board: Select a rigid, acid-free backing material such as foam core or mat board. Ensure the size of the board is larger than your print.

3. Trim the board and print: Measure and cut both the board and print to your desired dimensions, allowing for potential framing later on.

4. Place the print on the mounting board: Lay the print face up on the mounting board into its desired position and alignment while ensuring it remains centered.

5. Trim adhesive to size: Cut heat-sensitive adhesive tissue or film to fit within the borders of your print’s edges. This ensures no residue will bleed out when heated.

6. Position adhesive between print and mounting board: Carefully lift one corner of your print and slide in your pre-cut adhesive between them. Align its edges with those of your print.

7. Place release paper: Cover the entire surface of the exposed image with release paper or silicone-treated parchment paper, ensuring it completely covers the area.

8. Pre-heat tacking iron or dry-mount press: Plug in your tacking iron or heat up your dry-mount press according to its manufacturer’s guidelines and set it to medium heat (around 180°F to 220°F).

9. Begin applying heat: If using a tacking iron, work methodically from one corner of your release paper-covered print to the other, applying even and steady pressure while slightly overlapping each pass. If using a dry-mount press, place your print into it, close it, and apply even pressure according to manufacturer’s instructions.

10. Inspect the bond: After the adhesive cools down for a minute, carefully lift one corner of the release paper to examine the bond between your print and board. If it appears securely attached and smooth, proceed to the next step; if not, repeat heating until a solid bond forms.

11. Cool the mounted print: Allow your dry mounted print to cool on a flat surface undisturbed for about 20-30 minutes.

12. Lastly, trim excess board if necessary: Once cooled, cut any remaining edges of the mounting board (if needed) to ensure a clean finish.

These 12 simple steps outline how to achieve professional-looking results by dry mounting your prints. With practice and care, you can enhance your artwork while preserving its value and integrity. Happy mounting!
