Understanding your Grade Point Average (GPA), especially the unweighted version, is important for high school and college students. Knowing how to calculate your GPA can assist you in setting academic goals, applying for college, or planning your overall academic progress. In this article, we will provide a comprehensive guide on how to calculate your unweighted GPA.

What is an Unweighted GPA?

Unweighted GPAs are universally standardized across schools and institutions and are calculated using a 4.0 scale. Whereas weighted GPAs take into account varying difficulty levels of courses (such as advanced placement or honors), unweighted GPAs focus solely on the basic scores without considering course level variations.

Steps to Calculate Unweighted GPA

1. Assign point values to letter grades: First, convert each of your final course grades into their corresponding points using the following scale:

– A or A+: 4.0

– A-: 3.7

– B+: 3.3

– B: 3.0

– B-: 2.7

– C+: 2.3

– C: 2.0

– C-: 1.7

– D+: 1.3

– D: 1.0

– F (Fail): 0

2. Calculate total points earned: Add up the point values you assigned for all of your courses.

3. Count the total number of classes taken: Count how many courses you completed during the time period for which you want to know your unweighted GPA.

4. Divide total points by total classes: To calculate your unweighted GPA, simply divide the total points earned by the total number of classes taken.

Example:

Let’s say a student has completed five courses with the following grades:

– A (4.0)

– B+ (3.3)

– B- (2.7)

– C (2.0)

– A- (3.7)

To calculate the student’s unweighted GPA:

1. Add up the points assigned: 4.0 + 3.3 + 2.7 + 2.0 + 3.7 = 15.7

2. Count the total number of classes taken: 5

3. Divide the total points by the number of classes: 15.7 / 5 = 3.14

The student’s unweighted GPA is 3.14.

Conclusion

Calculating your unweighted GPA is a straightforward process necessary for understanding your academic performance and potential collegiate options accurately. By using this guide, you can quickly assess your educational progress and set realistic goals for yourself as you continue your academic journey.
