3 Ways to Eat Grits

Grits, a staple in Southern cuisine, is a dish made from coarsely ground corn kernels. This culinary classic has been enjoyed by generations of families throughout the South and has even gained popularity in other regions, thanks to its versatile and comforting characteristics. Whether sweet or savory, grits can be incorporated into a variety of meals. Here are three delicious ways to enjoy grits that span from breakfast delights to dinner showstoppers.

1.Classic Southern Cheese Grits

For an extra-rich and indulgent spin on traditional grits, try whipping up a bowl of cheesy grits. If you’re looking for comfort food that will stick to your bones, this recipe is for you:

Ingredients:

– 4 cups water

– 1 cup quick-cooking grits

– 1/2 teaspoon salt

– 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

– 1/4 cup butter

– 1/4 cup milk

Instructions:

Bring water to a boil in a medium-sized saucepan over high heat. Slowly stir in grits and salt. Lower heat to medium-low and cook for 5 minutes or until thickened, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and stir in cheddar cheese, butter, and milk until fully incorporated.

Serve your cheese grits as a side dish with classics like fried chicken or blackened fish, or serve them as part of a hearty breakfast with bacon and eggs.

2.Shrimp and Grits

For an iconic low country dining experience, make shrimp and grits—a longstanding favorite in Southern cooking that showcases the harmony between seafood and creamy corn goodness:

Ingredients:

– 4 cups water

– 1 cup quick-cooking grits

– 1/2 teaspoon salt

– 3 tablespoons butter

– 1 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined

– 1 cup chopped bell pepper

– 1 cup chopped onion

– 2 garlic cloves, minced

– 1 teaspoon Cajun seasoning

Instructions:

Prepare the grits according to package directions, adding butter for creaminess. In a large skillet over medium heat, saute the shrimp, bell pepper, onion, and garlic until the shrimp are pink and vegetables are tender. Stir in the Cajun seasoning. Serve the shrimp mixture over hot cooked grits.

3.Sweet Breakfast Grits

For an alternative to oatmeal or cream of wheat, sweeten your grits into a delightful breakfast dish:

Ingredients:

– 4 cups water

– 1 cup quick-cooking grits

– 1/2 teaspoon salt

– 1/4 cup butter

– 1/4 cup brown sugar

– 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

– Toppings: sliced bananas, berries, toasted pecans

Instructions:

Bring water to a boil in a medium-sized saucepan over high heat. Slowly stir in grits and salt. Lower heat to medium-low and cook for 5 minutes or until thickened, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and stir in butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Serve immediately with your choice of delightful toppings like fresh fruit and nuts.

These three ways to enjoy grits showcase their versatility—ideal for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Don’t limit yourself to these options; explore new flavors and combinations to find your perfect bowl of grits!
