3 Simple Ways to Become a Radiographer

Introduction:

Radiographers, also known as radiologic technologists, are healthcare professionals responsible for performing diagnostic imaging examinations on patients. These specialists use various techniques such as X-ray, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to detect, diagnose, and monitor diseases or injuries. If you’re interested in a rewarding career in medical imaging, here are three simple steps to help you become a radiographer:

1. Obtain the necessary education and training

The first step to becoming a radiographer is to complete an associate or bachelor’s degree program in radiologic technology accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or other recognized accreditation agencies.

Typically, an associate degree program takes two years to complete, while a bachelor’s program spans four years. These programs usually include coursework in anatomy, radiation physics, pathology, patient care, medical ethics, and imaging equipment. To gain hands-on experience using advanced imaging technologies and working with patients in different healthcare settings, students must also complete supervised clinical rotations.

2. Become certified

Certification is a crucial step towards becoming a practicing radiographer. The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) offers certification exams for prospective radiologic technologists. To qualify for the ARRT exam, candidates must hold an associate or bachelor’s degree from an accredited radiologic technology program and meet specific clinical competency requirements.

The ARRT exam consists of multiple-choice questions covering areas such as image production, radiation protection, patient care procedures, and equipment operation and maintenance. Successfully passing the exam showcases your knowledge and competency in the field of radiography.

3. Obtain state licensure

Licensing requirements for radiographers vary from state to state in the US—some states require certification as proof of competency before granting a license. To become licensed, aspiring radiographers should apply through their state’s licensing board or department of health.

Licensing requirements may include a background check, passing a state examination, and fulfilling continuing education credits to maintain licensure. Staying up-to-date with the latest technological advancements and radiography best practices through continuing education ensures that you’re providing the highest level of patient care.

Conclusion:

Becoming a radiographer can lead to a fulfilling career in the healthcare field. By following these three simple steps—obtaining the necessary education and training, earning certification, and securing state licensure—you’ll be well on your way to making a difference in patients’ lives as a skilled diagnostic imaging professional.
